Mascara - Black or brown

I have been using Max Factor in navy blue for quite some time and have been pleased with it, except that I now have to accept it is causing my eyes to feel irritated most of the time.

I think I'm going to try Estee Lauder's DoubleWear mascara but it only comes in black or brown. I have medium pale skin and my hair is mousy brown with blonde highlights throughout. Which colour should I go for?

Black. Always. Brown looks weird and sort of dull regardless of your colouring.

Hopefully · 27/05/2014 10:57

I wear (very very dark) brown - I disagree that it looks dull - black is too stark on me, makes my eyes look like piss holes in the snow. And I have pretty dark hair (but pale skin).

Black too much for me also, can you recommend a vv dark brown Hopefully or a navy Rudy?

Onesleeptillwembley · 27/05/2014 11:50

Ignore pp. If black doesn't suit you it looks, quite frankly, trashy. Buy a couple of cheap ones first to see which colour suits you.

Beeyump · 27/05/2014 12:10

I use Black Brown That's with very pale skin and red hair, looks best I think.

IDugUpADiamond · 27/05/2014 12:30

My eyelashes are extremely long so when I use black mascara I look like a wide eyed doll. A really dark brown or navy would be best for me I think; Does anybody know which of the premium brands do them?

Black/brown or black.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/05/2014 12:32

Do you coat the bottom lashes as well? Less doll like if you just do the top.

Beeyump · 27/05/2014 12:33

Ugh, navy, really?

Chanel do a dark blue in their volume mascara. My eyelashes are quite long and thick already....I love the effect the Chanel one gives, but it would be a bit full on for daytime in black, so I use the blue most of the time.

WildBill · 27/05/2014 19:49

I use Brown/black - Black is too harsh for me, Brown too weak.

MF do one as do a lot of brands.

Hello! I know Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes is a premium brand, but this really is better... just take a look at the reviews!

I love love love this product- it gives you well defined, sculpted lashes, doesn't flake... and all for 6.29!

Hello! Just thought I'd let you know my new favourite mascara Smile! It gives well defined, sculpted lashes and has a lovely finish. Feels good to wear, doesn't flake and is easy to take off- which is a plus!

And, all for 6.29. Love Boots so much! Got a couple of things from SEVENTEEN actually!

it wouldn't be the colour that was irritating your eyes so you might find that some other mascaras will also make your eyes sore after a while?

another vote for Chanel dark blue mascara. I haven't tried ByTerry but if you're looking for premium brands, they do a dark blue.

Be careful with the browns, some really do look awful and i know what pp meant about black. There are different shades of black so think there are blacks that suit everyone. I think brown is far harder to match although for some people they do work brilliantly. It can make for expensive trial and error.

I would suggest brown as it's much more flattering than black, which can sometimes look too harsh against pale skin.

RonaldMcDonald · 27/05/2014 23:48

Dark purple or black

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/05/2014 23:51

Brown-black for daytime, black for night here. But not premium brands, usually Revlon or No 7 for me.

callamia · 27/05/2014 23:52

I wear a No 7 waterproof black/brown during the day, and a Chanel black when I go out, or am trying to dress up a bit. I really like the No 7, it looks natural enough, but much better than nothing.

Ludways · 27/05/2014 23:56

Black for me as I prefer a more dramatic look and usually only wear at night, but DM and DSis both wear Brown/Black.
