I was getting increasingly fed up with getting my hair dyed light blonde every few weeks. It's awful condition and expensive to keep it maintained. I used to be dark golden blonde but it turns out my natural colour is now much darker. My hairdresser spent ages talking through my options with me then we decided on what I thought would be dark blonde semi permanent and she said I can get highlights in few weeks if I want. She said any lighter and there wouldn't be any point. It looked good at first. It was wet and under their lights it looked quite glossy. Now, at home, it is the colour of mud!!! It is as dull as dishwater!! :-( I knew there was a good chance this would happen. I've always wanted to be blonde and basically always had been. I don't feel this suits my personality or colouring! What can I do?? Prob won't be able to get in to see hairdresser for few weeks as it's a tiny salon and I can't go on a week day. Would it be awful to highlight it myself?? Arrrgh!!!!

Don't highlight yourself unless you know what you're doing!

I hated a colour which was put over my highlighted hair last year and I used Head and Shoulders to fade the colour to get the highlights to show through. Would using a clarifying/stripping shampoo (but with a very hydrating conditioner after!) help to get some of the lightness back until you next see the hairdresser?

Oooh thanks Koala, I have some anti dandruff shampoo! That might help. I'll give it a go

I think you should live with it for a bit and try to be objective about it. A friend of mine has dark blonde hair, and has highlighted it her entire adult life. She's one of those people who says, "yes, it's highlights, but I'm blonde anyway". Grin

Anyway, she'd over highlighted it and it was looking brassy and too blonde, her hairdresser put a colour over it and it looked fab, her skintone was much better. Mate hated it though, it didn't match the way she identified as 'blonde', she didn't feel 'special' enough.

Can you get an objective opinion about it?

Thanks Womb. I know what you mean but my friends are all too damn polite!!! My DH is scared of upsetting me further!

Just wash it loads. If it was a semi permanent it will fade quickly and your highlights will show through again.

I really hope so! I'm having bad flashbacks to when I was 13 and used one of those Wash In Wash Out sachets. I applied it cack-handedly, it was all patchy and darker on one side and it stayed in for six months!
