Alternative to the ubiquitous Converse?

Is there one?! I know little about fashion but need new trainers to mess about in. I'm quite baggy jeans/scruffy, outdoorsy but not sporty. I'm 34 - I used to wears Vans but is that ridiculous for me now. I don't want to look like a middle aged mum channelling Avril Lavigne circa 2001!

Rocket dog? What are they all about?

I'm interested to know too. I'm now living in Europe and everyone is wearing Nike's or Vans. My converse have just worn out but I might just replace them with more converse.

JohnSnowsTie · 17/05/2014 21:21

Supergas.

DaftSkunk · 17/05/2014 21:22

Superga's? I don't own a pair but they are mentioned a lot as a possible alternative?

Urvy · 17/05/2014 21:23

Just looking on eBay. I'm so old. I searched for supergas. I see you meant plural of superga!

Ooh, they're retro British looking!

I like Rocket dog though they don't fit me very well. My 40-something friend has something like these and they look fab.

For myself I love Keens, come in lots of styles, plain and patterned.

But there's nowt wrong with converse IMO. They are a classic, like jeans. I don't like the pointy toe because I have v big feet, but apart from that I think they look good on everyone.

Urvy · 17/05/2014 21:25

I don't like them much actually. Rocketdog look good from what I've seen (and bid on!)

I am 47 and still wear converse. Didn't know they were age restricted items.

SecretSpy · 17/05/2014 21:25

I got some Vision streetwear pumps. made by Dunlop I think.

Much more comfy than previous superga ones
and v cheap

JohnSnowsTie · 17/05/2014 21:27

Yes sorry I regretted the "s" as soon as I pressed send!

ihatethecold · 17/05/2014 21:28

I love my converse but I recently bought some grey superga's.
I really like them and have found them very comfy.

Urvy · 17/05/2014 21:42

Converse aren't age-restricted at all. My point was Everyone has them. I'm checking Vans aren't age restricted (I know they're actually not) as I wore them as a teen!

I'll check out those Dunlops.

Ooh, I like Keens.

Superga are very comfy. I've got 2 now, light blue and leopard.

bettykt · 18/05/2014 08:27

After 20 years of Converse wearing I've finally gone over to the other side and have started wearing New Balance 410 trainers. They are super comfy too and look vaguely stylish for a trainer. I'm in my mid 40s fwiw.

I like Rocket Dog Jazzin. Have converse too but live the rocket dogs. They come in ace colours and patterns.

Deverethemuzzler · 18/05/2014 08:57

I just buy Lonsdale and dunlops from Sports Direct.
Look the same, cost a tenner.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 09:01

Toms. I love them.

youmakemydreams · 18/05/2014 10:34

think I fancy Toms. What size do I get? Do I get a close fit to allow stretch?

GiniCooper · 18/05/2014 11:02

I have superga. I bought them having seen them recommended here so often.

They're bloody awful. Heavy and uncomfortable. I do like the look of them but they aren't a great shoe.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 12:27

They do stretch. Im a four and daftly got a five last time and they just

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 18/05/2014 12:29

oops got baggy quickly.

Ive since got a four and they are snug at first but get comfy very quickly.

Corygal · 18/05/2014 13:06

Keds are good, and come in lots of zingy shades. Palladium are fashionably retro but cost 50 quid.

I favour a plain white plimsoll from Primark, as so cheap you can buy 10 pairs and always have boxfresh white tootsies.
