John Lewis bra measuring

I'm a bit disappointed

I went to JL today to check my bra. I usually go to an independent store owned by a Rigby and Peller trained fitter, and when I went was measured as 35 inches round the band. She told me either a 34f or 36e depending on the bra and since then I have worn a 34f and find them very comfortable.

I've lost a bit of weight and measuring myself round the band I am now 34 so I thought I ought to check the cup size

The lady in JL measured me as 36????

Now I'm a big girl and can try on bras to see which fit better but I though JL would be better than M&S...are they?? Did I just get a newbie??

Or is my tape measure broken

I'd hazard a guess she probably didn't measure tight enough.whenever I've been fitted in john Lewis though they've only ever used a tape measure to get a band size then figured out cup by trial and error. Normally they don't need the tape at all, they just work it out from how existing bra fits

YoghurtRaisins · 15/05/2014 15:17

Did you try any on?

Normally they go with my current size and give me an armload to try on, changing sizes and styles depending on the fit.

Lady I saw was brilliant, declared me a 30E before even getting the tape measure out and she was right.

RufusTheReindeer · 15/05/2014 17:41

Funnily enough she measured my band and said what size are you wearing now

And looked quite confused when I said 34f, she looked again and said well it fits very well...yes I know 34f fits well

I bought a bikini top in debenhams a bit later and ended up in a 36 d??

The bit I don't get is if you asked me how tall I am I would say 5 ft 7.. You wouldn't then go oh so let's add 2 inches on for a laugh!!!

Or if the doctor said how big is your waistline, I wouldn't go well it's 29 inches so I'll tell him it's 31

I didn't try any on as i was really just checking, will pop to my little shop after half term

I brought dd to John Lewis for her first bra. They were ridiculously crap.

amazonianwoman · 15/05/2014 20:43

All the John Lewis fitters in my nearest store are excellent - not a tape measure in sight, they go by existing bra/fit + visual and bring in loads of styles. They also recognise that different brands fit differently.

John Lewis lingerie dept lady wouldn't let me try nursing bras because I wasn't heavily pregnant enough. DD was 8 mo at the time and I was half a stone under pre pregnancy weight, so was quite upset at being told I looked pregnant at all Hmm

YoghurtRaisins · 15/05/2014 22:20

But sizes come up differently with different clothng brands, so why not bra brands? I may be a 10 in Gap, but pretty sure I'll not squeeze into a 10 in Top Shop.

Picturesinthefirelight · 15/05/2014 22:22

I've found JL very good, I'd been wearing a 36c & was astounded when they told me I was 32D

I measure 31 but they tend to go up one if you are inbetween& I did try a 30 but it was way too tight so maybe they just come up a bit small.

RufusTheReindeer · 15/05/2014 22:44

yogurt

I see your point with cup sizes but 34 inches is 34 inches, a tiny bit of variation I can understand but two or three inches different

But that is what you do isn't it, get a good idea and then try bras on til you get one that fits well

But OP you said she measured you as 35, which could either go up one to 36 or down one to 34.

No, when I was measured about 4 years ago (for the first time) I was 35 inches. They said I would be either a 34f or 36e depending on the bra but all the bras I have "liked" have been Freya, fantasie, curves Kate etc and they have all been 34f

I was always happy to look at bigger bands if I liked the bra but it was never really necessary

When I measured myself after 1.5 stone weight loss I am now 34 inches, it is a definite inch loss. Plus she didn't say you are 35 inches so would be either 34 or 36, she was quite positive I was 36

I probably didn't make that clear in my OP Grin
