I've had the same hair style since I was about 9. I'm 32 and my baby loves to grab and yank my couple-of-inches-below shoulder length hair.

I don't have the time or energy to spend each day on styling but need something different (shorter?) - despite vowing never to succumb to the mummy bob.

I'm not going to mess with the colour - tried that already and going darker (from highlighted mid blonde) made my ever increasing greys even more obvious.

I don't have very delicate facial features (big nose and cleft chin - god that makes me sound hideous...) so don't want anything really cropped. I currently have my hair parted slightly off centre with a few vague layers. It is quite fine (gets greasy v quickly) but I have a reasonable amount of it. I have a slight cows lick so not sure whether a fringe (or a sweeping fringe?) would work.

What should I do?!

Have you had a chat with a hair dresser?

Without seeing you, the only bit of advice I'd give is if you're past a certain age, don't go too dark and yeah, don't fall into the safe mummy bob trap. It can look lovely on some, but it just looking boring on most.

I went onto a virtual hair styling website last nigh. Safe to say that even with her hair superimposed onto my face, I do not resemble gwyneth paltrow. Ha ha ha!!

You sound just like me and I have the hairdresser coming tonight! I always think my hair looks a mess and it has no style to it but it's thick with a wave and hard to style. Tricky one.
