How do you test foundation in store

When its one of those stores that don't have a tester for you to take home, just the opened tester one on the shelf?

I am currently testing some Clarins ones which I am doing at home with the sachets, but today I tried the Yardley Whipped Matt Mouse and the Yardley Airbrush Foundation in store as there is none to take away. I have always been told to test it on the back of my hand, so I have, but I cannot work out if the colour is correct this way. Also the back of my hand where I applied the Airbrush Foundation, looks all wrinkly and 100 years old! So if the hand is a good indicator then goodness knows what that will look like on my face. Surely you cant be putting it on your face in the shop can you?

I thought either inner arm/wrist area or jaw line if you're not already wearing foundation?

I know I'm an NW 20 in Mac so I google what shade is closest to what ever range it's in. This works well and I've got it right every time doing it this way. There's loads on beauty blogs/reviews.

The side of your face gives you a better idea of match.

Oh and I test on the back of my hand and go outside the shop to test in day light.

Lisa Eldridge recommends you test it on your jawline near you ear.

There aren't usually good mirrors in shops,I know what NW 20 looks like on my hand so it's easy to see if it matches that.
