Boiler suit

I tried a navy boiler suit on in topshop yesterday, it was £55 but essentially just looked like a boiler suit. So I came home and ordered one off amazon for 15 quid. Have I lost it?

As long as you are slim you will look fine. I just don't think they are a look that someone with a large build or no waist can carry off.

dexter73 · 08/05/2014 09:03

That has made me laugh! I think you might have lost it!

unintentionalthreadkiller · 08/05/2014 09:06

A jump suit or an actual boiler suit?!

iMacHunt · 08/05/2014 09:10

First thought was these guys.

I take it you won't be wearing a mask with it though?

I love that look. No slipknot (though I did go to their concert), but the utility jumpsuit look. Keep it streamlined, roll up the legs and arms and wear with heels. Awesome.

SandorClegane · 08/05/2014 09:43

The one I've ordered is an actual boiler suit, I will wear it either with converse or rolled up with my dms. I am fairly slim at the moment. I'm quite excited actually.

The one you linked to immediately made me think of Oddbod in Carry on Screaming.

An actual boiler suit is workwear and the material is stiff.

Fabric that drapes is far more flattering

I would say 10-20% of the parents at my school wear those? Tradies the Australians call them. Think Kylie on Neighbours all those years ago.

KissesBreakingWave · 08/05/2014 11:54

Get a flame retardant one. Then you've got a CAST IRON excuse for never ironing it. (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?)

Also you're protected against being accidentally lit on fire.

SandorClegane · 08/05/2014 12:01

The one I bought is quite a thin material I think, those ones are nice but not really me - they're not boiler suity enough.

I'm going for a kind of New York artist in the 1980s vibe.

I know what you mean OP. I think it will rock.

EasterSundaySimmons · 08/05/2014 16:56

What you want to look like and what it might look like are two different things! ;)

So.... It's arrived! And it's massive! But I have a plan to alter it a bit thus rendering it excellent. It already looks ok with a big belt and the legs and arms rolled up a bit. I'm going to attempt to make the legs narrower though - is that a possible thing? I have a sewing machine.

Bunbaker · 09/05/2014 11:18

I used to have a navy boiler suit. I liked it at the time - late 1980s. But I was young and slim and thought I looked ok.

SandorClegane · 09/05/2014 11:33

Mine is black, it's developing into a project I think.

OP posts:
EasterSundaySimmons · 09/05/2014 14:39

To make the legs narrower, turn inside out and from the crotch sew down towards the bottom so that you are taking in the leg from the outside seam.

EasterSundaySimmons · 09/05/2014 14:40

Sew down to the bottom of the ankle, I mean.

noddyholder · 09/05/2014 14:44

I really like them but you need to be stick thin ime. I tried one on in zara and it was very comfy but I am too old and busty!

SandorClegane · 09/05/2014 15:39

I have been wrestling with my practically antique sewing machine, attempting pretty much how you suggested Sunday, will get the machine out again once the children are away to their beds!

Is carrying off this look a case of sizing down?

Just out of interest, you know. whistles nonchalantly
