Advice for bra for dd aged 10

TemporarilyOutOfOrder · 06/05/2014 21:14

I've noticed my dd aged 10 is developing so decided to measure her using the underneath chest and then bending over and around fullest part method. I got 26" under and 30" around which I work out as being 26D. Surely this can't be? She's only ten and quite slender. Any advice would be great.

I had my DD measured at M&S for her first bra and still do now that she is nearly 15. Very happy with the service but at my local M&S I have to book. U like their range for younger girls although I would not buy M&S undies for myself.

WildBill · 06/05/2014 21:32

I've never had to bend over for fittings at M&S or John Lewis. Just standing straight. I think gravity would add inches bending over.

ImAThrillseekerBunny · 06/05/2014 21:38

I'd get her to John Lewis if you can. In the meantime get some good quality Lycra sports tops in a size 6 or whatever. I wouldn't recommend M&S for bra fitting (and given what you've posted already, you know why) but they have a big choice of stretchy sports crop tops for preteens.

HazleNutt · 06/05/2014 21:44

If your DD was measured in M&S Vanilla, then she's very likely in a wrong size. They have no idea and use an outdated method.

Yes, it's quite possible for your DD to be 26D - at 26 back, D is really not a big cup, it's the same volume than 32A. Bras will be a challenge though, not that many 26 back available. You could get a 28 and use Rixi clip to tighten, but you'd need 28C, and those are like unicorn tears as well. More choice in 28D, so hopefully she'll grow a bit soon..

About to ask a similar question. Hope it's ok to tag onto this thread?

DD is away at school and needs new bras. Can't get her to john Lewis for a proper fitting until end of May so want to order a couple now to stop her getting teased. Have to be M&S unfortunately.
She's current wearing 30A which is far too small.
Measurements are 28" under and 32" bust.

Help! What shall I get for her?

TemporarilyOutOfOrder · 06/05/2014 22:04

i measured her using this thebetterbracampaign.blogspot.co.uk/p/fitting-advice.html

I know what you mean, bras in that size and also 28C are nowhere to be found!

PeriPathetic, that would give 28D

HazleNutt · 06/05/2014 22:06

28D, Peri. Try here: 28d

Dd measures 27 under 29 over & we compromise at 28b

ilovepowerhoop · 06/05/2014 22:09

Op, could you use stretchy crop tops instead for a bit of support. DD is also 10 and has started develop but is still happy with crop tops in a similar style to racer back sports bras

direct.asda.com/george/girls/underwear-socks/2-pack-floral-trim-crop-tops/GEM292343,default,pd.html - dd has ones like this

HazleNutt · 06/05/2014 22:09

OP, M&S seems to have a couple of bras in 28C you can try.

PeriPathetic · 06/05/2014 22:12

Bloody hell Shock thank you so much. No wonder she's getting teased! She still likes 'childish' bras, ie simple, jersey type material. No hint of sexiness.
I'm not risking Figleaves prices yet, but I've something to work with. Much appreciated.

TemporarilyOutOfOrder · 06/05/2014 22:14

thanks for the links im just looking now. she did have some crop tops but they were a bit short on her and didnt quite cover her. she's quite tall and slim ( wish i could say she got it from me but she doesn't)

Does she really need an actual bra? Petit Bateau do some pretty little bralet things that are small around the back, she would need the age 12 most probably (that is to fit a 10-12 age). If she does need a proper bra, then it might just be trial and error. I measure 26 and a half round my ribs, and I wear a 30. I find the old method fits me better than the interventionist one, I don't like really tight backs, and I'm sure not a lot of bras are still made to fit the trad way, where a 30 bra was for a 26 rib. So she might be perfectly comfortable in a 28. I measured 24/25 at 15 though, when I first had a bra, with what was probably an F cup, so I had no luck at all finding bras, there weren't even many 32s then. i had to buy big ones and alter them myself. Cut them apart at the front and chunks out of the sides!

cosikitty · 06/05/2014 22:21

I'd guess a 10 year old wearing a bra using the method you used would find it very tight (if my dd is anything to go by). I'm still getting used to wearing the correct back size after 6 weeks and still notice how snug and restricting it feels. I'd suggest a 28, especially as she's probably growing fast as well. Remember a bra will feel odd for her at first.

TemporarilyOutOfOrder · 06/05/2014 22:24

yeah i think she does personally, there's quite a lot of movement in that area, especially when she is running and jumping which is quite often as she is into her sports. i've just looked on m and s and theres some pretty ones on there. Just off to look at Petit Bateau now.

I took my DD (nearly 12) to M&S to buy bras when she started Yr 7

They didn't measure her but brought in about 7-8 different ones to try until they found one that the fitter was happy with.

They do stretch and get a bit mangled (DD isn't the most careful with them, I think she's still treating them the same as her crop tops and hoiking them off still fastened. Oi DD - no )

Nocomet · 06/05/2014 22:37

No way am I paying fig leaf prices for a growing teen who needs two/four bras.

DD2 can make do with 34 A M&S ones.

I Know, I Know you'll all tell me I'm wrong, but Neither DD1, me or DD2 find the tight bands big cups trick works perfectly.

I put an extender in my 36 DD because it really hurts.

DD1 has a 34D (as opposed to her usual 36 B) which fits strapless, but the straps are in the wrong places.

Bras just [confuse] us all!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/05/2014 22:48

I bought 6 bras for DD in Sept and another 4 new ones (sizing up because she'd grown) at Easter.

At her age she needs a fresh one every day, no way would I pay £££ for them, she grows so quickly.

Nocomet · 07/05/2014 07:32

Too right, DD2 is already moaning hers are too small.

ilovepowerhoop · 07/05/2014 08:22

DD2 is probably right to moan hers are too small if you are trying to squeeze her into a 34A as that means the measurements under and over the bust are only 1 inch different which is unlikely if she has apparent breast tissue.

LightastheBreeze · 07/05/2014 08:38

I would probably take her to M&S and get her to try on several in the Angel range and buy what she finds most comfortable at this age to get used to wearing a bra.

HazleNutt · 07/05/2014 08:43

Nocomet but if your DD is moaning that the bra does not fit and your own bra hurts you, then your current loose band-too small cup does not work for you either.

What about a trip to Bravissimo? Yes, the bras are most likely too expensive for a growing teen, but at least they would fit correctly and you can then hunt for bargains on ebay and amazon.
