Advice for bra for dd aged 10

TemporarilyOutOfOrder · 06/05/2014 21:14

I've noticed my dd aged 10 is developing so decided to measure her using the underneath chest and then bending over and around fullest part method. I got 26" under and 30" around which I work out as being 26D. Surely this can't be? She's only ten and quite slender. Any advice would be great.

Tia

John Lewis has a teen range which includes 28C & 28D. They are all t-shirt bra style.

I noticed that BHS had a nice range of tweenage bras when I was in at the weekend.

Sorry to hijack post but how do you know when to move from crop top to bra?

Dd is 11 and has been wearing crop tops for a good while like most of the girls in her class. I've noticed more shape developing lately, should she now be wearing bras? I think she might feel a bit awkward at primary, maybe leave it till the summer holidays?

Bravissimo is rubbish for wireless bras though, and growing breast tissue shouldn't really wear a wire. Soft bras have a more flexible fit, which allows for a wee bit of growth, and don't dig into breast tissue. Growing breasts need to be treated like pregnant ones. Older teens may want wires for the shaping, but they are better for when the breasts have stopped growing, or for parties etc. Wired bras are more expensive too!

Reminds me of when my sister, forbidden at 16 to wear a bra by dm Hmm managed to purloin one of dm's out of the dirty clothes basket and wore it stuffed with tissues... for a year.

I dared to ask dm for a bra as we were in John Lewis. After much huffing and puffing I was allowed a nylon beige monstrosity that looked like prison issue.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/05/2014 16:05

Helly it's not actually necessary to go wireless in pregnancy. You just need to ensure that the bra fits well.

Op, whilst your dd measures at 26d it's not unusual for people who are very slender to need a band sizr bigger than they measure due to lack of padding over the ribs so I would try a 28b and 28c.

The don't add inches method is right on average but some slender women need extra inches, and some larger need a band size which is smaller than they measure.

My dd had her first bras fitted at JL which was good. I also bought her some sports bras - from Sweaty Betty sale and also TK Maxx - she liked wearing the sports bras to school.

hellymelly · 07/05/2014 20:54

I agree that yes, you can wear wires when pregnant, but I personally think it is hard to get a good fit, wires don't offer much flexibility, and when pregnant my breasts changed day by day, that would have been a lot of different bras if I had worn wires. I wore bras while breasfeeding once things had settled.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/05/2014 21:15

You do have to be careful with fit. But I was a J cup for most of my pregnancy - wireless just made me look like I had a pillow stuffed down my top. And generally showed under my work clothes too!

hellymelly · 07/05/2014 21:20

I was an H cup, so I sympathise. I went to Rigby and Peller, they found one solitary bra to fit me. It was a particularly ghastly shade of beige, was very comfortable though, in a "Doreen" sort of way.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 07/05/2014 21:27

Exactly the same as DSD. Go to John Lewis, they have lovely supportive soft teen bras. She'll need a 28C.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 07/05/2014 21:28

Oh and at that size she will need proper support. Crop tops won't do it :)

Nocomet · 07/05/2014 21:41

32 C's seem to fit (they look the same size as 34 A), I really don't understand bras at all.

Also I'm certain M&S have pissed about with their sizing as my oldest 38B's are more comfortable than new ones.

ilovepowerhoop · 07/05/2014 21:46

32C has the same cup volume as 34B which has the same cup volume as 36A.

BluebellTuesday · 07/05/2014 21:54

I got my DD the sports crop tops from M&S, but then she doesn't want a bra yet, although she definitely needs the support. I think they are great actually, they are from the adult section but small size and good for growing iyswim. They are practical rather than stylish, but she is happy with that, thank goodness.

StatisticallyChallenged · 08/05/2014 08:34

Nocomet there have been loads of reports of marks pissing about with their sizing in the last year or so.

cosikitty · 13/05/2014 18:42

I measure 31" under the bust but can't even fasten an M&S 32", their sizes are weird.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/05/2014 18:57

Are you trying a big enough cup size? Their sizes are nuts though

Picturesinthefirelight · 13/05/2014 19:09

If you measure a 27 so have to go up or down a size do you still keep the cup size the same.

Eg

Is 27/29 a 26 b or a 26c?

And if you have to go up to a 28 because 26 doesn't exist is it 28A ( which dd says feels too small in M&S) or 28 B which is comfy but a little bit big in the cup.

StatisticallyChallenged · 13/05/2014 19:27

You try both. So, normally for someone who is an odd number we give 4 sizes to try. In your case, that would be 26B, 26C, 28B, 28A. However, nobody makes 26s really so try the 28s!

It sounds like she's probably just slightly in between sizes - I'd maybe order some more 28Bs online so she can try a few different ones. She'll also grow more obviously so better a tiny bit big.

QueenBean · 13/05/2014 19:35

When you measure underneath, you add 4 first.

So, she measures 26+4= 30
Then if she measures the same its A, 2 more, B etc. If it's one under it's AA.

Your daughter is 30A.

I used to work in M&S in the bra dept (when it was still good)

ilovepowerhoop · 13/05/2014 19:41

no, dont add 4 extra inches!!!!!! That gives a bra that is too big in the back and too small in the cup

ilovepowerhoop · 13/05/2014 19:42

M&S have a crap measuring system so dont use that.

ilovepowerhoop · 13/05/2014 19:46

using the M&S method (add 4 inches to back size) with under cup size of 36 and over cup of 38 would give you what bra size then?? A bra size that doesnt exist!! Thats why it is a silly method.

Picturesinthefirelight · 13/05/2014 20:01

He'll will freeze over before I use the add 4 method having seen the difference when John Lewis measured me properly for the first time ever.
