Hair advice. Urgently!!

I'm sitting in the hairdressers having my colour done. Then I'm going to have a Brazillian blow dry thing. So I've got a couple of hours before I have it cut.
I have long (bra strap length) hair with a grown out blunt fringe. My hair is very thick & when it's down it just falls all over my face & annoys the hell out of me.
I wanted to have some layers, well, quite a lot of layers, kind of that 'two hairstyles in one' thing you see, the short bob on top with long underneath bit, plus I want my grown out fringe incorporated into the hair around my face.
Told my hairdresser all this & he sucked his teeth in a plumber-esque way& said if I have layers my hair will puff out more.
So what should I do? Insist on layers? Stick with it long & one length and never have my hair down because it irritates me so much?
I want to keep the length. I just wanted it less heavy!!
Any suggestions?
I have a big fat face & short neck btw.

Could you not just get it thinned out? I can't give any advice about layers puffing out but I thin DDs thick hair with thinning scissors.

netty36 · 03/05/2014 09:18

Worst thing I did was get my thick hair thinned... But layers also drove me mad so I've gone back to almost one length with really long layers at the ends.. This works well. The two haircut layers on me looked like two distinct cuts... Not nice!

Germgirl · 03/05/2014 09:19

Thanks, I'll ask about those. I just wanted a nice hairstyle rather than a triangular lampshade on my head!
I shouldn't let Steve the stylist intimidate me should I?
I hate haircuts!!

How long are your longest layers netty? I was thinking of the shortest one being kind of below my earlobe.
Hmmm. Maybe I should just shave it all off.
I'd look like Millie Tant out of Viz though.

Ask your hairdresser what he would suggest if he doesn't think layers are the answer? Look around the hairdressers and see if there is anyone who has a style you want or look in magazines and ask how he could achieve it?

Germgirl · 03/05/2014 09:24

I asked him dancemom, he just said to leave it one length & cut my blunt fringe back in.
But if I do that I'll never wear my hair down. It just annoys me so much. All heavy & falling in front of my shoulders. Yuk!
The lady in the chair next to me is bemoaning her thin hair. I'm whining (internally) about my think hair. We're never happy are we?

Think hair?! Durr! Fat fingers!
Thick hair!

I have my long thick hair cut with long layers and sort of cut in at the front.

I can't quite picture the cut your talking about. Do you have a picture of what you want?

Germgirl · 03/05/2014 09:38

I've been frantically googling 'medium length layered haircuts' & I suppose I mean something like this.
Only she's beautiful & I'm a pig.

I'm with the lady in the next chair. Stupid thin hair and I long for long thick hair.

Tell him you don't want that hairstyle, he must be able to give more advice than that! I'd say look in the hair magazines they have lying about.

My mum has long thick hair the bitch and her hair looks best with the 2 in 1 hairstyle you suggest but with the 'bob' being just about her shoulders or lower.

Nishky · 03/05/2014 09:41

That's a lovely style - make him do it- what is the worst that cam happen - you would just have to grow the layers out.

You are paying him, make him do it!

Nishky · 03/05/2014 09:42

Cam happen? CAN

MikeLitoris · 03/05/2014 09:50

That's a lovely cut. Have you shown him that?

netty36 · 03/05/2014 09:54

My layers are now an inch or two shorter than my hair, but they were earlobe length which made it poofy. Go for long layers... Just do it xx

CurlsLDN · 03/05/2014 10:14

I have super thick hair, and the cut you've linked to is my go-to! Whenever I have it one length it's triangular, with all that hair just piled on top of itself and hanging like a shower curtain. Get the layers! It will feel so much lighter, and have movement throughout. Perhaps start them from chin length so you can still tie it up if needed. I don't know what your hairdressers problem is, they're always desperate to chop into mine!

MikeLitoris · 03/05/2014 10:16

My layers are about an inch or two shorter too. Shorter around my face, shortest probably about jaw length.

Long layers won't make your hair pouffy

Germgirl · 03/05/2014 11:18

He's cut it! He lay in wait for me when I came back from having the dye washed off.
I showed him the pic. To give him his due, he didn't laugh too much.
He's cut long layers in & shaped it around my face a bit.
He held it up & gesticulated to about 6" from the end, "shortest layer there?" He said. I waved my hand around a bit till he agreed to go a further 2 inches higher.
So I have long layers. He broke out the thinning scissors but only used them on the bottom 2" of the layers 'to break it up a bit & avoid a line'
I'm now sitting with the Brazillian blow dry stuff on. It's stinging my eyes like buggery! Apparently that's normal.
We shall see. I've never been happy with any haircut but it suspect that's because I hate the face below it more than I hate the actual haircut.
Oh, when he cut the front bit he said "I've cut it to chin level", "which chin?" said I. Oh how we laughed! Smile

Germgirl · 03/05/2014 13:04

It's done. It's ok I suppose.
The layers are pretty long but it's not triangular.
It's very very smooth & swishy at the moment because of the treatment. The acid test will be what it's like once I've washed it.

Remember you can't wash your hair for 3 days after the Brazilian blow dry!

TheCatThatSmiled · 03/05/2014 17:50

And take a selfie with your hand or something in fr
