What denier are properly opaque tights?

I am a TA, I usually wear trousers for work but have bought some work dresses that come to just below my knee, I have done a bending over test and they are fine, no knickers can be seen.

Even so I want to wear totally opaque tights with them, without even a suggestion of skin underneath. I like the thickness of girls cotton rich school tights but ideally I would like coloured ones not black or grey.

Does anyone know what I should be looking for or know what thickness is acceptable for working with children. Or should I play it safe and try and get leggings instead but they you have the what socks problem.

I think if your dresses come to below your knee you could wear sheer tights!

I usually get 100denier cotton rich tights (like school ones) from m&s or John lewis, but I've only ever found grey or black. Topshop did bottle green and burgundy a couple of years ago, but doubt you'd find till all the a/w stock comes back in.

I got a great pair of fleece lined tights from John Lewis. They are like leggings in terms of cover but have feet so you don't need to worry about socks. FWIW I do not think anything less than 60 denier is truly opaque and I often go higher.

I thought it was a % system, so always assumed 100 d was 100%.

Happy to be corrected.

60 and above is what I consider opaque.

contractconfusion · 26/04/2014 21:12

Ok Thanks everyone. I shall look for above 60.

I find Primark 80 denier are pretty opaque. Do a few different colours and are cheap. Try a pair.

As others have said, if the dress is below knee wouldn't worry about showing your kickers.

M&S velvet touch 60d have been perfect for me. They are more expensive but never catch. 5 pairs have kept me going for the last couple of winters and they haven't got a catch or snag on them. Well worth the investment.

I also have M&S velvet touch! They last years
