What's wrong with my toenails?

I'm hoping for some advice on what the frig is happening to my left foot's nails and what to do about it.
I've noticed the last few times I've cut them that they are really thick like they are growing in width from the nail bed.
I haven't damaged them in an accident, I don't wear tight shoes, it's not an infection and they don't hurt. They are starting to look ugly and when I paint them I have to put a dab of polish on the tops of the nails so it's not so noticable or if I didn't you'd be able to see how thick the nail is.
Right foot is normal.
Help me please.

Hope I've explained well enough :)

Are you sure it's not a fungal nail infection?

Walnut8 · 23/04/2014 13:18

Sounds fungal, see a doc.

gamerchick · 23/04/2014 13:19

I would say it's a fungal nail infection or in my husbands case you need a size up in shoes.

frogslegs35 · 23/04/2014 13:32

Thanks for replies.

Fungal, really? - Oh no I'm scared to google now but I'm going to have to and see if it looks similar.

Percephone and Walnut I've not had it checked but assumed if it was an infection I'd have other symptoms.

gamer Hmm, your post gives me reason to possibly point the blame at one of my trainers, and I mean just right now :) I forgot until I read about your DH.
For some reason and only on my left foot, the trainers I've been using most often have felt a little too close to my toes - I wouldn't say tight nor uncomfortable but where I can feel it now and I couldn't before.

Could be the only symptom of a fungal infection - it's really not that bad if it is, will just need some cream! Smile

frogslegs35 · 23/04/2014 14:08

Thanks :)

Bleurgh!! just googled photos mine don't look like that but it could just be mild so will make an appointment with GP and he can decide what it is.
That and not wear the trainers I mentioned upthread, just in case.

Thanks again.

I think you can get thickening of the nail in the early stages. The yellow flaky nails appear later so get it sorted quick!

ihatethecold · 23/04/2014 19:09

Use a cotton bud and wipe on tea tree oil everyday.
Or Vicks!

frogslegs35 · 23/04/2014 23:19

Thanks both.
I'm back in the UK in the next few weeks will stock up on Tea Tree - this Country or possibly just this City seem to have a drought, I've been looking for some for ages.
Think I've got some vicks though so will start with that.
