Washing suede? Madness?

I have a lovely buttery-soft French connection suede jacket which I bought in the sale and wore once before a big house move triggered a very unfortunate dirty protest from the cat.

Seeing as the dry cleaning would cost more than the jacket, I'm almost convinced to have a crack at washing it just need to work out the best method. Is it going to go stiff and horrible anyway? Is it even worth a go? Anyone has success with washing suede and wants to share tips?

It will ruin it - it will go crispy and horrible.

Bugger. Bin it is then. Thanks anyway!

I have a friend who always washes suede. She says you have to use LOADS of fabric conditioner.

Tbh I would have binned it as soon as the cat crapped on it!

MarieJeanne · 13/04/2014 09:16

You might as well try and wash it before binning.

I've washed my suede jacket, dried it outside in the wind, wachled it about every now and then then gave it a good brushing once dry - good as new Grin

Thanks, maybe I will have a try. Dexter, it's a bit of wee on the collar, don't worry, I'm not sitting round the house with a shit-encrusted jacket hanging in the cupboard! I thought I'd dry clean it but was a bit naive about how much dry cleaning suede costs. Might chuck it on a cool wash with a load of conditioner and see what happens. Thanks for the advice!

If it's only a bit of wee then definitely worth a try in the machine. Everyone washes their Ugg boots in the machine and they seem to come out fine. (Glad to hear it's not a turd-encrusted collar though!!)

I washed uggs - they weren't the same afterwards.

If you really love the jacket then get it cleaned but if you're not that bothered then try washing it.

There was a thread on here a while ago about this and in the end loads of people admitted washing suede and it came out fine apparently. I will have a search and see if I can find it.....

LOL at dirty protest!

Why don't you try sponging the offending area with a damp cloth and a tiny dab of leather cleaner?
