Can anyone talk to me about perms?

My sister, mum and SIL have said that they think I should get a perm. I am open to the idea because my hair at the moment is just boring but I don't really know anything about them.

What do I need to know? How do you look after them? Is it a really bad idea?

I've not had a perm since the. 90's. But if the concept remains the same you have to be careful with colouring your hair and perking it as both really dry your hair out.

Thank you, I haven't put any colour on my hair for about 7 years so I should be ok with that side of it.

At the moment my hair is very straight, thick and heavy and about bra strap length. It's dark brown with a few greys coming through.

No no no don't do it.

What attracts you about a perm? Curl, volume? Or are you just bored?

Perissa · 11/04/2014 23:32

All 3 really, because my hair is long and heavy it is very flat around my face and hangs down a la Morticia Adams Grin

My mum and my sister have got curly hair, I have inherited my dad's dead straight hair.

I want to keep the length so I can put it up if I want. I used to have a very short, blunt bob which I liked but there wasn't really much I could do with it.

Have layers put in as it will give your hair movement & volume rather thsn a perm. If you keep it straight, then you have the flexibility of curling & changing your
style after each wash.

Most hairdressers no longer do perms - remember having a home perm once -oh the horror!!
Plus they smell horrible, or they used to!

If you get long, thick, one length hair permed it won't work properly and will be dragged straight at the roots and stick out at the bottom voice of 90s experience

Honeydragon had a live perm thread in S&B about 6 weeks ago, if you can find that it had lots of discussions on perms and some most amusing photos

BitOutOfPractice · 12/04/2014 07:42

Nooooooooo. Perms are a great idea. Always crap in reality.

Can't you get some layers cut into it avoid the Mary Hopkins look?

zeddybrek · 12/04/2014 18:28

I have similar hair and have been looking into having a Japanese perm. Also known as an electric perm. It's meant to give you soft waves as opposed to a 90's look. Haven't had one yet as hoping to have one as a post pregnancy treat.

I'm still LOVING my perm, and it's still looking good. I think I did in January Cutted Shock
