Birkenstocks, worth it or not?

Are Birkenstocks worth the money? I am looking specifically at the Gizeh ones but like some of the other styles too. All the ones I've see seem to look dirty where the foot sits in it, do they all go like that even if you have clean feet?

also what's the sizing like, true to size, narrow/wide or what? Not many shops down here stock them so i may need to order online if I decide to buy.

sorry this subject has probably been done to death but my flip flops are minging and will not do another summer! Grin

btw wearing my Gizehs now - I have feet on the wide side and the regular fit perfectly...

Hard wearing, very comfy, size down.

I had mine for ten years, wore them almost every day. I am evangelical about their comfort. They finally fell apart after much abuse and I am saving for a new pair.
But they were very painful for the first few days whe the cork moulded to my foot. And even I wouldn't call them attractive. But my feet - healthy and free - look great.

I am on my 2nd pair of Arizonas, I had the other pair for about 6 years - I love them and you can drive in them easily but not the madrids I find.

I have a pair of Madrids that I just don't find as comfy as the double strap Arizonas.

My husband finally bit the bullet and bought a pair too and now he is a convert :)

My feet swell in heat, so my Gizehs are my usual size.

I love Birkenstocks. I wear a couple of pairs as soon as the weather allows. Always Madrids. So comfy.

Can you really bung them in the washing machine? What wash? Mine always get a bit stinky.

Wuxiapian · 02/04/2014 22:48

Love my Birki's. Worth every penny!

Yup, I wear Mayari and sometimes Gizeh. Hate Madrids, they bruise the top of my foot! I wear them throughout the summer, wash them, and they tend to last 2-3 years. Love, love, love them, for all their fugliness.

So glad to hear they've come around again! The past few years I have tried (and failed) to stop wearing them but they are the comfiest thing ever for my wide, flat feet. I like the look of the molina ones, might go wild and buy them somewhere other than costco this year!

TaurielTest · 04/04/2014 16:47

In a way, I'm fed up they've 'come around again', it's made them harder to find ... just being contrarian though. My new Madrids arrived from Germany this morning less than 48 hours since I ordered them :)

I'm a massive fan of Scholl Biminis, which are IMO slightly finer/less chunky than Birkenstocks, and are really comfortable too.

DisappointedHorse · 04/04/2014 18:41

I love my Birkenstocks, I have a pair of Bronze Mayuris that I look forward to wearing every summer.

Cocolepew · 04/04/2014 18:49

I can drive in the Madrid's no problem. I buy my usual size in them.
