What is wrong with looking mumsy?

Just that really.

What is mumsy? I associate mumsy with being comfortable. In which case I was mumsy long before I was a mum.

The problem with mumsy is that it is a style which most women would not freely choose, but which they are forced to adopt through practicality and post-natal body changes.

I think most mumsy women (myself included) would eschew the look if our bodies and lifestyle allowed.

What is wrong with looking mumsy?

I thought the (an?) essence of style was dressing appropriately so no clubwear at Ascot etc

what people are really saying is that there is something wrong with being a mum, and having the lifestyle of a mum. No longer as young and as pert and who have other priorities rather than enhancing their attractiveness. Middle aged mums just can't compare to young hawt things, in todays world. none of us want to give it up!

polyhymnia · 15/03/2014 21:46

If I use mumsy at all - which I rarely do - I just mean frumpy .

Don't think it's just to do with being overweight - I'm large but don't think I'm frumpy - nor do others. I'm a tall hourglass with long slim legs and dress for my shape and height. Also try to choose great bra, hair cut, and glasses.

Still wearing skinnies, which suit me, but agree they must cease to be at all stylish at some future point. Unfortunately any jeans which are at all baggy look clown like on me.

Strange you mention scarves, oranges, have some nice ones - eg Lily and Lionel and Comptoir des Cotonniers but - without realising why - have been feeling less comfortable in them and the urge for plain colours if I wear them at all.

Casting around for spring/ summer shoes as don't want to buy lots more ballerinas. But, as with skinnies, not ready to give up entirely. Look forward to sandal season as some stylish but comfortable ones in for this summer!

polyhymnia · 15/03/2014 21:48

Also agree scarves with animals birds etc look very dates now.

southeastastra · 15/03/2014 21:55

walking around town today i was surprised at how 'mumsy' so many women my age (44) look. Nothing daring was seen was all safe calf high boots in boring colours, bland colour hair and cheapy jumpers.

sad really as there are so many fab items around that are a bit colourful, people seem scared to look different these days.

BIWI · 15/03/2014 21:58

And yet more posts, criticising other women.

Do you lot every think about what you're saying and how offensive it is?

southeastastra · 15/03/2014 21:59

fgs mn - leave all opinions at the door

SinisterSal · 15/03/2014 22:01

Who do you mean SouthEast - not your own, I take it ? Wink

polyhymnia · 15/03/2014 22:02

Not sure style thing actually has much to do with being mums, etc.

Was at a college reunion today with women from very wide range of matriculation years - some older than my friend and me, some younger. We both felt that some just presented themselves non-frumpily whatever their age ( and status as mothers, their careers, etc) while some didn't.

scottishmummy · 15/03/2014 22:03

How dare you reprimand women for expressing an opinion.ill opine about men or women
I don't subscribe to some twee notion that all us sistas got to show solidarity nice words only
It's immaterial whether or not women are opining in other women, and no it doesn't have to be affirmative

TheJumped · 15/03/2014 22:05

I assume sea was being sarcastic Confused

noddyholder · 15/03/2014 22:07

It is me verystressed but it was a joke Smile I don't think women are that bothered about how other women dress I rarely see anyone frumpy and its not to do with age ime Wear what you like!

Nocomet · 15/03/2014 22:13

I own two very nice fleeces, but DD2 forbids me wearing them.

scottishmummy · 15/03/2014 22:14

Nice and fleece
That's an oxymoron

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 15/03/2014 22:15

I quite admire a mumsy mum.

I just chopped off my mid-back locks to a shoulder length bob so I'm well on the way.

Smile
MaudeLynn · 15/03/2014 22:15

So c'mon Scottishmummy - did you ever take your kids to the park or somewhere they might have fun and, if so, what did you wear?

BlueEyeshadow · 15/03/2014 22:20

Oh Lord, I really shouldn't read these threads! I don't know why I do. However confident in myself I feel normally, by the time I get to the end of one of these threads, every last remnant of self-esteem has been torn to shreds.

scottishmummy · 15/03/2014 22:22

Park,I do the park?
When not working,jeans,high boots,top,light coat,pashmina
No fleece,no uggs,no parka.

SinisterSal · 15/03/2014 22:23

Pashmina

scottishmummy · 15/03/2014 22:26

You can get a medicine fur that cluck

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 15/03/2014 22:31

I like those fleeces with pictures on them, I.e wolves howling at sunset or puppies gamboling about. I think you have to be at least 60 and partially senile to wear one with no questions asked, though.

Kikithecat · 15/03/2014 22:32

Grin Saga

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 15/03/2014 22:33

Nice one here

TheJumped · 15/03/2014 22:35

What kind of a light coat sm? Could be anything from a fleece to a colour block leather biker.

Don't be sad Blue, do you like fashion? That's all this is about really. If you enjoy fashion it's fun, if you're not bothered then go on as you are - it's entirely optional Smile

southeastastra · 15/03/2014 22:36

at least those howling wolves fleeces show the wearer has some sense of who they are. they are wolf loving people!

it's the blandness i can't stand. the boring highlights, lack of any imagination pah.

men are just as crap. we really lack style in this country
