Skinny Jeans for ample thighs

Big hips and small waist (10" difference between the two!) - any recommendations? Am bloody sick of bootcut!

I'm a size 16-18, so pretty "ample" all over.

Skinny jeans suit me best, with a longish top.

emsyj · 09/03/2014 22:13

Oh, I don't 'not like' your sweeping opinion Finance - I'm just rather surprised that you would make such definite comments about what will and won't suit someone whom you have never met. Just bizarre, really.

The tone of some of your posts is rather aggressive. You are, of course, free to post in this way if you want - just as I am free to poke fun at you for it. Enjoy!

blueshoes · 09/03/2014 22:53

Would be interested to see a link to an ample-thighed person who looks good in skinnies.

I don't wear skinnies for reasons Finance states, having seen some horrendous examples in RL but happy to be proven wrong.

Lj8893 · 09/03/2014 23:24

Trying to find a picture of me in skinnies, but I'm sitting/kneeling/bending in every photo so doesn't really give a good example!

monicalewinski · 09/03/2014 23:30

I avoided skinny jeans for ages as I am hourglass and have a generous bum and thighs (regardless of whether I am a 12 or a 16, my proportions stay the same).

I only started wearing them last year and have found that one or two styles do actually suit me - the new look high waist skinny jeans are a lovely shape and look good with a long line cardi, with a fitted top underneath.

Another pair that might be worth trying are bootcut, but not a dumpy style, next high waist bootcut - they look v flattering with high heels/wedges or low wedged sandals.

I agree that you can't just have the rigid rules re shape - with my shape I have to try things on even with the same styles but if different makes. Also, it is better to go with more form fitting clothes and embrace my big ass, I spent far too many years being swamped by too big clothes in a bid to cover up and just made myself look even bigger, and super dumpy.

I am holding on tight to the current bandwagon of the hourglass being popular, and dread the day that flat bums make a comeback!

Just buy jeans that fit your hips, thighs and arse, and get the waistband taken in. Simple!

cafecito · 10/03/2014 00:15

I disagree with Finance too, I think bootcut can look worse. If you choose well, dark skinnies and a longer top can really make everything look so much slimmer

monicalewinski · 10/03/2014 01:06

Blueshoes, Google Jennifer Lopez skinny jeans and beyonce skinny jeans - lots of examples of them looking good in skinny jeans, and some not so good - but proving that you can be ample of thigh and bum, and still get skinny jeans to suit.

Walnut8 · 10/03/2014 02:43

Diesel jeans - my friend is a true pear shape (tiny waist but proportionately big bum - for a size 8!! - "ample" thighs leading down to slim knees/calves/ankles. Anyhoo, she has straight leg and skinny leg diesels and she says they are the only type that she truly thinks flatter her. You can be slim but still have parts of you that are relatively ample.

pseudonymity · 10/03/2014 10:15

Waist 27 hips 39. A lot depends on your actual shape - if you have saddlebags then jeans look bad quite often.

Recommend Levis Bold Curve jeans.

HelloBoys · 10/03/2014 10:22

You can have bigger thighs but long legs (I'm that way), I put on or take off weight on thighs, hips and stomach first.

Stretch jeans are nice - Leigh by Top Shop - the black ones great to go out in.

Finance - unless you're a style guru please don't pass judgment over EVERY body shape out there, like some say here, what works for them works for them. In fact I saw a very pretty petite Latino woman when out on Saturday in skinny jeans - she was uber curvy but carried them off very well and looked amazing. Far better than the bigger woman I saw in clingy purple stretch fabric with huge norks spilling out (it wasn't just me commented on her, it was the dress that didn't suit!).

I can't think of stretch blue jeans - H&M did a nice skinny but then they changed the style!!! GAH!

HelloBoys · 10/03/2014 10:24

Oh Top Shop Kristen are nice - high waisted skinnies - but size down, they bag awfully if you get them loose - in fact most of them give so if they feel a bit tight don't worry, they're stretch out in wearing/washing etc and most reviews on them say so.

Lj8893 · 10/03/2014 11:50

This is brave of me!
This is me in skinny jeans (sorry its abit of a rubbish pic) I'm ample all over I know that, and I would still look ample in bootleg/flares/straight leg whatever! But I think considering my size, I look alright.

Ps: its my birthday so if you do think I look horrific, be honest but please be nice about it!

Skinny Jeans for ample thighs
Hoppinggreen · 10/03/2014 11:55

I'm a size 14 and hourglass. I don't like skinny jeans s they cling to my calves but I do like straight leg ones, especially GAP or Sainsburys

Shimmyshimmy · 10/03/2014 12:04

I have ample thighs, it's just my shape - I'm not large though - size 10-12. The jeans which look good on me are Jigsaw Richmond mid rise skinny and Gap Real Straight. I hate Bootcuts, they feel so drab.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 10/03/2014 12:05

You look good in those LJ Smile Happy Birthday.

I agree that 'slim leg' jeans are often a good choice (with the right top for a curvy woman. I am an 18/20 depending on the cut. But I have strong shapely legs - boot leg jeans age me and I still look like a 'big girl' in jeans. I have a big bum even at my slimmest and I am tall with a long body - The main thing is to find a good fit which is hard with a hourglass or pear shape and I struggle with the low cut of so many jeans. But high waisted slim leg cut is the best I have found with a flattering top or tunic and nice boots or my trusty converse.

Wide leg trousers are often cut too short for me and short and wide is not a good look for anyone. I do have a lovely navy patterned pair of Jaegar palazzo pants they are a perfect length fully lined and v comfortable but jeans are more useful on a day to day basis and finding some you are happy in is great.

babysaville · 10/03/2014 12:15

i found curtains both fitting and stylish

Lj8893 · 10/03/2014 13:18

I don't think I need to resort to wearing curtains just yet Hmm

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/03/2014 14:18

Curtains?!?! How about blinkers for the ignorant/shallow/egotisticals (who probably look like ***)

blueshoes · 10/03/2014 14:21

Lj8893, that looks neat and attractive

Lj8893 · 10/03/2014 14:22

Thank you blueshoes and bigmouth

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 10/03/2014 14:26

I think it looks good too!

A close female friend of mine is a big girl (bigger than you by quite a bit) yet she looks great in a denim mini and leggings,or in a top and skinny jeans.Looks better in her simple outfits than many slimmer women

YorkshireTeaGold · 10/03/2014 14:28

I'm ample of thigh and think skinny jeans look good ... I'm (usually, got a nearly 5 month old and am running on hob nobs) a size 10-12 and 5' 8", just hourglass shaped.

The next relaxed skinnys are fab and I love Paige denim(but v expensive). Think the secret is the fabric needs to have some substance and not be really thin and stretchy. The topshop Leigh ones look horrific on me.

I think skinny jeans look good on a proper curvy figure.

Elfina · 10/03/2014 16:01

LJ you look brilliant! Hope you're having a lovely birthday :)
