Make up on the train

Is it acceptable to do your make up on the train .. Powder blush mascara and lip balm. Nothing gross like eyebrow plucking
I do get some funny looks. Isn't it normal/acceptable?
What's a girl to do?

I can understand finding it annoying if the person next to you is sticking their elbow in your face while applying make up, but unhygienic? Really?

I can't say I've ever even smelt the makeup when I've seen someone applying makeup on the train.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/03/2014 09:08

Viva, you perceive some one who puts make up on PT as vulnerable? Bizarre.

catgirl1976 · 08/03/2014 09:14

I do it. It's a good use of time.

I couldn't give a monkeys what anyone thinks

coffeeinbed · 08/03/2014 09:15

Someone is brushing their hair on the seat acros the aisle right know.
It is minging.

Her hair is matted and the brush makes a scraping sound when she tried to drag it through.

catgirl1976 · 08/03/2014 09:16

And I puff away on my ecig Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/03/2014 09:20

I bet if men do start their beauty routine on PT there won't be threads about them being 'disgusting' and 'needy' and 'vulnerable.'

The language used on this thread is telling, it says a lot more about the individual who feels the need to slate others for doing something that isn't remotely offensive.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/03/2014 09:21

Coffee, invest in some ear phones and look out the window.

Slapperati · 08/03/2014 09:31

I need a ruling on whether it's one t or two in Slapperat(t)i

MadBusLady · 08/03/2014 09:39

Yes, DameDiazepam I wonder if some people have a whole slightly fucked-up bundle of issues around sex, disgust, femininity etc and associate all of that with make-up. The reactions here are so visceral, it's odd.

coffeeinbed · 08/03/2014 09:47

No it does not help...I have all commuter accessories. Grin
It's a scraping all penetrating sound.

That hair is so matted I'm sure it's bulletproof.

BrandyAlexander · 08/03/2014 10:14

Vulnerable and needy?!Shock just putting on my make up on the train. And I thought I was in the UK not SaudiShock

NuggetofPurestGreen · 08/03/2014 10:15

nooka how on earth is someone putting stuff on their own eyes intrusive to anyone else? And unless the person's elbow is moving round vigorously near you I can't see how it invades your personal space.

And still don't get the weird faces. Who cares if other people are making weird faces? How sensitive are you people? How do you go out in public at all?

This thread is really winding me up. And agree with posters that are saying there's something very odd about the visceral reactions. Women's routines should be private because the things we do are disgusting.

BoomerangSam · 08/03/2014 10:19

When I was young, I sat on a quiet train. The man opposite me put his hands down his pants and started wanking.
Someone got on once with a massive wooden cross and started blessing each person on the train and tried 'knighting' them with the cross.
Two women sat opposite me and went into very explicit details about the sex they had last night with each other.
I've had men rub themselves up against me, swear at me and sing to me.

I seriously cannot get why putting make up on the train is offensive Confused
You've all had sheltered commuter lives, haven't you?

TSSDNCOP · 08/03/2014 10:26

This subject is as SM says one that polarises MNers, same as shoes on/shoes off and loo brushes.

It's not real. In RL no one gives a tiny rats arse if you put your mascara on on the 7:18

AnaisB · 08/03/2014 10:27

Out of interest vivat vulnerable to what? - needing what?

If you mean "needing others' approval based on their physical attraction" then doesn't that also apply to people who put on all their make-up at home? Or is beautification OK if it's a secret?

theQuibbler · 08/03/2014 10:29

I'm another one who didn't know this was something that people got worked up about. As DameDiazepam has said, the language on this thread is striking. So much disapproval and tutting and slut shaming.

I don't usually put make up on whilst on the tube - although I have done so - maybe I need to start doing it more regularly.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 08/03/2014 10:32

Thanks TSSDNCOP. I know it's one of those polarising subjects but at least with shoes on/shoes off and toilet brushes I can actually see the reasons why the shoes on and no loo brush people think it's minging (outside dirt being brought inside/shitty stick sitting in your bathroom) and can also see what the shoes off/loo brush users are bothered.

This one makes no sense, I cannot see what's minging about makeup!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 08/03/2014 10:32

aren't bothered.

ProfondoRosso · 08/03/2014 10:35

Absolutely, Boomerang. God, the sights I've seen on many a Glasgow bus! Someone putting make up on doesn't even register. Hell, sometimes I do it myself.

Seriously, though, agree with Nugget. This all comes down to women's 'rituals' being 'inevitably charged with sexual meaning, hence inappropriate for public consumption, hence disgusting. This kind of analysis has been going on for years - lipstick equals brandishing the vagina in public, etc.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 08/03/2014 10:35

Ha ha. No one I know in real life has a no shoes rule and everyone has a loo brush!

NuggetofPurestGreen · 08/03/2014 10:39

Yes Profondo and I think there's also something in the 'you're offending the people on the train as you don't care if they see you without makeup' comments - women should present their completed perfected selves to the world at all times or not at all, how dare we be selective about who we are wearing the make up for!!!

Gakkers · 08/03/2014 11:11

The only disgusting thing about putting makeup on on public transport is the state of some women's makeup!!! Grubby broken mirrors, 20 yr old palettes, filthy application tools. I have an ishoo with that. I do my make up on the bus all the time....usually I have a seat to myself and it takes a couple of minutes. I love seeing what products women are using too.

scottishmummy · 08/03/2014 12:09

Well it's my phrase so it's slapperatti, for all you disorganised gurning mingers

CaptChaos · 08/03/2014 13:08

Couldn't give even the smallest of shits. I haven't commuted for a good few years now thank god but when I did the very least of my dramas would have been a woman putting on make up. Having unwashed armpits thrust in my face was pretty nasty. Getting my tits and arse stealth-fondled almost every day was disconcerting. Having to listen to boring twats whiffling on about who was fucking whom in the office was.... boring. A woman who wants to put make up on? A total non issue. Certainly not akin to changing tampons etc... what a weird thing to compare it to!

On the rare occasions I bother with make up, I don't gurn when I apply it, those who do must be very odd indeed!
