I bought a big tub and when I brought it home, its hard, like a rock. Stupid question alert but how do people use that as an emollient, hair conditioner etc? I can see me eating or cooking with it but feck all else!

As soon as you scoop a blob with your fingers, it will instantly start to melt in your hand.
Rub your hands together and splurge on hair or body.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 28/02/2014 16:34

I scrape it with the back of my fingernail. One or two sweeps of my finger harvests about 1/4 - 1/2 cc, which is generally enough for my whole face. I melt it by rubbing it between my palms.

It goes such a l

IslaValargeone · 28/02/2014 16:35

long way?

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 28/02/2014 16:35

ong way that I would never use up a whole jar before it went off. So I decant a couple of spoonfuls into a little tub for the bathroom, and keep the jar in the fridge.

HandsOffMyGazBaz · 28/02/2014 16:36

Really? Its like a frickin rock!!!

Sometimes my phone posts before I'm ready!

IslaValargeone · 28/02/2014 16:37

premature communication.

Floisme · 28/02/2014 16:41

If it's that hard, it sounds to me like there's something wrong. As other posters have said, you should be able to scrape some off quite easily.

HandsOffMyGazBaz · 28/02/2014 16:42

Hey its very common Grin

Ok I will try to take a bit out and see how I get on!

Blitz it for 20 seconds in the microwave. T will soften.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 28/02/2014 16:57

If you've only just walked into the house with it then it probably is very hard because its coooold outside. Tomorrow it will still be firm, but much softer. Melts at about 20C, I think.

Best not to nuke it, as that will negate some of the benefits of using cold-pressed VCO.

tshirtsuntan · 28/02/2014 17:07

I buy it in a Glass bottle and pop it in a bowl of hot water or the bath to soften.

chipsandpeas · 28/02/2014 17:10

i melt mine in the microwave

fideline · 28/02/2014 17:10

In summer, the stuff's a dribbly nightmare.

fideline · 28/02/2014 17:21

(hit send too soon) but i have certainly had to take nail scissors to coconut oil in winter before. How cold is the room? Just pop it on a radiator for a bit.

IslaValargeone · 28/02/2014 19:24

:o at Hergraciousmaj :o

MostlyCake · 28/02/2014 19:31

Where do you get coconut oil? Have heard good things and feel like giving it a go!

fideline · 28/02/2014 19:32

Amazon or boots do little jars

fideline · 28/02/2014 19:34

Or any shop stocking a reasonable range of cosmetics etc for BME skin/hair

IslaValargeone · 28/02/2014 19:34

Sainsbury's also do it in the olive oil aisle.
Virgin organic stuff for about £6.99
