too old for this dress?

Bought a dress in outfit sale
Black knitted. Little short sleeves slim body 'full' (unsure of word) knee length skirt.looks lovely for my figure. I wondered in the shop if it might be a bit young (am 47) but it was in the sale!
Dd said it is a bit.
Scared to wear it now! Was for work or evening out.
Don't want to look like mutton.
Ideas?

Sounds nice. IMO if you have a good figure, age matters a lot less!

46direct · 21/02/2014 21:41

Thanks.
Maybe I will be brave!
With black tights and little black flats and short dark purple cardi I have?

46direct you wrote: looks lovely for my figure.

That's your answer there.

sugar4eva · 22/02/2014 08:39

I'm 50 wear similar all the time with at shoes. Enjoy.

winterlace · 22/02/2014 08:57

It's hard to say without seeing the dress or you but I do work with someone who wears clothing far, far too 'young' for her and it's ageing rather than having the opposite effect. She wears a lot of dresses like the one you describe Blush

murmurations · 22/02/2014 09:06

Did you say to your DH, is this dress too young for me? My DH panics if I ask him about my clothes and just tries to guess what I want him to say.

winterlace · 22/02/2014 09:13

It was her DD I think

46direct · 22/02/2014 09:14

Winterlace
This is what worries me!

Oh I feel bad now! Am sure you look lovely!

(The woman at work also frequently wears her hair in two pigtails!)

I think the problem is when from the back you could pass as a teenager then your face looks older - not saying you look old at all though! Could you post a picture ... I understand why you wouldn't want to though.

It's a lovely dress and I really don't think you'd look like mutton worn the way you describe.

winterlace · 22/02/2014 09:42

That looks fine to me! The skirt isn't too swirly and it's a lovely length.

46direct · 22/02/2014 09:48

...and I won't be wearing pigtails!

StatisticallyChallenged · 22/02/2014 10:12

I have the long sleeved version of that and would say it's pretty ageless. Mind you, my mum is 64 and wears fit and flare dresses (which suit her figure very well) and doesnt look silly IMO

GhettoFabulous · 22/02/2014 11:07

That's lovely, and a real classic.

RonaldMcDonald · 22/02/2014 11:31

Is it a skater dress?

If so please use with extreme caution

46direct · 22/02/2014 12:33

???? What do you mean?

OP posts:
Floisme · 22/02/2014 14:10

The dress looks fine. (I wouldn't call it a skater.)

'Mutton', along with 'too try hard', is used to belittle any woman over 45 who has the audacity to still take an interest in fashion. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life in elasticated trousers I would ignore them - or even wear the words with pride, like your dress.

I would "Like" this if such a thing were possible on MN. You've hit the nail on the head.

Interesting that there are fewer age-appropriate jibes made at men.

Floisme · 22/02/2014 18:27

Thank you 50ShadesOfMaybe Smile Yes, I agree there is a gender dimension. In fact it seems to be women policing other women which is both interesting and depressing in equal measures.

Anyway op, it's a nice dress and it suits your figure so enjoy wearing it.

burnishedsilver · 22/02/2014 20:29

I like it. I'm in my 40s and I wouldn't think twice about wearing it. It's simple and elegant.
