Help! What to wear for work meal

CuriosityCola · 19/02/2014 20:01

My partner and I have been invited to dinner at a very naice restaurant with his boss and his partner.

I have two young children and can't remember the last time I had to dress up.

I'm tall and average built. A little bit of a wobbly post baby belly.

What do people wear out for nice meals and drinks? I don't know where to start :(

Little black dress, nice shoes and jewellery?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 16:38

Do you want to buy something, or have you got some stuff that might do? Where do you usually shop?

HelloBoys · 21/02/2014 16:48

If you want to buy something - which I presume you do then give us an ideas of fabrics, colours (aside from autumn) you like.

A tuxedo would be a bit too smart but I'm sort of agreeing with TEACUP's LBD suggestion only because they can be great, you could add accessories in your colours, maybe velvet/sequin scarf etc or shoes.

I always feel more comfortable in trousers, smart top and jacket? You could play it safe with the colours and add some bright accessories?

Boltonlass1972 · 21/02/2014 19:35

Remember a plain safe outfit can be made 'pOsh' with glittery accessories. Sparkly earrings, nice feature necklace and heels can dress up a basic black top over leggings. Recently I bought quote a cheap outfit from Matalan: £4 long vest (hide tummy), leggings with heels, but a black and white soft blazer and glittery scarf with big hair and big accessories. Primark is brill for cheap accessories that will make You look a million dollars! Hope you have a lovely time. Depending on your budget you could get some new shiny heels from Primark..I got mine in black patent for a tenner (plus 1.50 for gel toe inserts Wink

Whereabouts in the country are you? Northerners get much more dressed up than southerners.

HelloBoys · 21/02/2014 21:23

Actually yes heels with trousers can glam up instantly.

Boltonlass1972 · 21/02/2014 22:28

If it's a posh restaurant you know, I'm sure you can judge the dress code pretty accurately. Yes I'm a northerner living in the south but I stick by the idea it's better to be overdressed than underdressed in a posh restaurant. I would ask DP: if it's his boss, he'll want to impress so maybe he's got an idea in his mind what you might wear.

Also, what day of the week is it? If a weekday and the men will be coming from work, you don't want to look too try-hard. Agree re scoping out the restaurant beforehand to see what people wear.
