Haven't worn lipstick in AGES! Have a big-wish birthday coming up, and would like to buy a nice red (nothing too pricey).

How can I tell if it's the right red for me though? I -think- I suit a blue based red, but I could easily be wrong.

I'm fair skinned, light blonde (dyed) hair and light blue eyes.

Helpl!

Get to a MAC counter if you can. I had never worn red or never felt brave enough to. The girls were brilliant and I swap between RUSSIAN RED and RUBY WOO. I have an Asian/olive skin colouring hazel eyes and dark blue/black hair and was told RUBY WOO suits all types. And I know blue based reds are meant to suit me or so I have read.

Thank you! I like Mac, so will make my way there. :-)

Viva glam! I am a pale skinned dark hair and eyed brunette- never thought I would find a red.

HairyFairyFoof · 18/02/2014 22:21

I have your colouring OP and Mac Ruby Woo suits me perfectly Smile

HandMini · 18/02/2014 22:21

I can't help you on specific colour but on product Clinique Chubby Sticks are very non scary and you can later them on thickly or just a quick swipe over lip gloss.

MamaPingu · 18/02/2014 22:29

How much is a mac lipstick? Smile
I want a red too! I've wanted one for a while but feel they make my teeth look yellow?! I hope they don't look like it normally Shock

bawabod · 19/02/2014 15:44

sorry MamaPingu but I don't recall, they tend to last a long time and TBH I don't buy a lot of makeup but will spend on quality products if its going on my face, but I am sure they are no more then £15.

MabelStark · 19/02/2014 16:45

I love Russian Red and Ruby Woo too! I'm pale with dark hair. Russian red makes my teeth look pearly white too. I find Ruby Woo very dry though, is there a secret to application? What liner do you use with either/both if these colours?

RunsWithScissors · 19/02/2014 22:47

Lovely, thanks everyone.

Think mac lipstick is about £25 if my quick google search is correct. Will look some more for any discounts online.

The chubby stick sounds very good too!

Yay!

Ask the girls on the make up counters to pick one for you and apply it (with a full make up job if you have time), then go off for a couple of hours, looking in all the mirrors you can find to see what you think of it! Don't buy before you're sure.

capet · 20/02/2014 02:29

I have gotten mac ruby woo and Russian red from debenhams online, think they are about 15 quid but you could check on debenhams website. I also find them a bit drying? Colour is good but most of the time I just amn't brave enough to wear it during the daytime. I'm pale with red/brown hair by the way

VenusDeWillendorf · 20/02/2014 02:53

Ruby woo made a mess of my lips, they were dry and cracked after about an hour, so all mac lippy is a no no for me. Took about a week of Vaseline before they were alright again.

The chubby sticks are fabulous in Clinique- they are in different formulations, from sheer, to a more intense colour.

If you haven't worn lippy for a while, you might want to ease yourself into it, and see if the sheer clinique stubby one suits. If you like the colour then go for the heavier pigmented one.

Try before you buy.

Have fun at your big wish birthday!

MsAspreyDiamonds · 20/02/2014 03:30

I suit deep reds more so viva glam I by MAC is my preferred shade.

scarlet76 · 20/02/2014 06:59

I second Clinique chubby sticks. I have a red called '2 ton tomato'. It's quite sheer and easy to wear. I've had lots of compliments when wearing it. For me it was a good starting point for wearing red lipstick.

BreakOutTheKaraoke · 20/02/2014 10:06

Mac lipsticks are about £13-14 each.

VillaVillekulla · 20/02/2014 11:28

I recommend Revlon Fire and Ice if you want something cheaper than MAC. Lovely colour and consistency.

ILoveWooly · 20/02/2014 12:21

Boots No7 by Poppy King do a fab reasonably priced red range. Really long lasting and moisture rich.

cressetmama · 20/02/2014 14:39

Maybelline Hollywood Red (strong pink red) and Pleasure Me Red (true red) both seem to suit most complexions, and at £8 are not too spendy and not as drying as MAC.

Beeyump · 20/02/2014 15:35

Oh, and it truly is hydrating! My lips feel so good after wearing it, not cracked at all.

bawabod · 21/02/2014 16:28

Mabel Stark I agree RUBY WOO is a bit dry but I prime my lips with a serum or moisturiser before I apply any lipstick then I blot. then reapply and off you go. I just love the colour The RUBY WOO is one of their matt lippys but the textures do vary depending on the colour. AMOROUS is fab and a good one I use allot on days I don't feel up to a strong red.
