Anything that I should get that I can't get here or that is much better value in the US?

Any favourite shopping experiences?

I'm just back from US. Levis are MUCH cheaper ($40-$60). Some American brands are cheaper, converse, Coach, Ralph Lauren etc. but not that much to be honest. I liked Old Navy for cheap kids clothes

Lighthousekeeping · 11/02/2014 22:21

I would only buy the Anerican high end brands on sale. Centuary 21 is good for presents like Ralph Lauren scarves socks etc for men. American Eagle good for teens that line Holister. I got my Converse on sale at footlocker. Miles cheaper. You have to keep an eye on luggage weight though. I took all my candy hand luggage.

Saharap2 · 11/02/2014 22:27

Ditto suggestion of century 21 and I also love sephora. Brooklyn flea market is good for random bits and pieces. I haven't got any clothes there but got some gorgeous wall prints.

Lighthousekeeping · 11/02/2014 22:29

Michael Kors in Centuary 21 is as cheap as chips I just remembered.

Lighthousekeeping · 11/02/2014 22:31

Damn spell check!

Brooklyn flea is amazing for jewellery and knick knacks I agree plus there's some cool bars around that area.

Sephora "make up " store, I'm just back 2 weeks and can't wait to go back again, went to Jersey Gardens outlet and can't say I was impressed so next time it will be Woodbury Common. Have a fab time

madammecholet · 12/02/2014 08:54

Woodbury Common is amazing - go if you can, its an hour by bus from NYC... its SO WORTH it!

Lighthousekeeping · 12/02/2014 18:00

Kate spade has a good sale on. 75% off.

Eminybob · 12/02/2014 18:07

If you have a DP with giant feet then buy lots of shoes while you are there. They do bigger sizes as standard than here. Mine is size 13 and hardly anywhere here does them so we stocked up in ny.

DilapidatedGlamourpuss · 12/02/2014 22:53

Jersey Gardens outlet is 30 mins from central Manhattan- buses run from the Port Authority bus station every 30 mins.

I went there twice with my DP in Nov- got 2 lovely Tommy Hilfiger handbags for £25 each, loads of underwear/fragrances from Victoria's Secret on 70% off, DP got Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein shirts for £20 each... go! So many bargains :D can't wait to go back to the US later in the year and get more! This is probably the one occasion I'll say I'm glad DP travels a lot for work Grin

Saltwater sandals - brilliant for the kids and a dream to walk in - the only sandals I have bought that I have not blistered my feet. Toast sell them for £50 a pair and the kids versions are around £35, I'm sure they are half that price in the US.

I see on a lot of the threads that you get reductions if you bring your passports to the department stores. Do you need to go to a special area for this? Is it like shopping 'duty free' in one of the stores here and having the tax refunded?
Or is it just tracking to the sales person and its at their discretion?

If you bring your passport to the visitor centre in Macys and Bloomingdales you will get a discount card, I think it is for 11% off and some brands might be excluded. Also if you go onto the Gap US website, sign up for their emails they will send you a voucher to use in store, when I went it was for 25% off all purchases, this is only valid for a month so only do a week or two before you leave to make sure it is still in date.

Newhere2 · 15/02/2014 08:15

thanks Click thats really useful

Old Navy do the same thing.

Newhere2 · 15/02/2014 09:33

great.

Any advice on best places to shop for handbags?

OP posts:
HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2014 09:40

I'm off soon and plan to buy Levi curve jeans as other have said.

Also planning to hit J Crew and old Navy.

Anyone know if Coach is cheaper in the US?

Re Apple, IME they charge in dollars what we pay in pounds, so quite a big saving.

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2014 09:42

Just checked the exchange rate, what's wrong with £1: $0.6?

Lighthousekeeping · 15/02/2014 09:42

Coach is cheaper in the outlets but I don't know about the shops. Maybe in the dept stores where you can claim your discount?

HermioneWeasley · 15/02/2014 09:44

Thanks Lighthouse
