Idiot-proof lipstick application?

I've treated myself to an awesome new lipstick. It's a deep wine colour and I love it. However, as a lipstick novice (I've only really worn nude glosses before) can you please point me into the direction of the best online prep/application tutorials or share your own lipstick tips?

You'll need a lip liner to give you a clean line and to prevent the lipstick from bleeding. It also gives the lipstick something to hang on to.

Then apply a coat of lipstick, blot and reapply.

That's about it really.

The modern way is to dab the color on with a fingertip for a lighter stain. This works particularly well for dark and bright colors. I remove possible extras with a Q tip. If you alternate between this and the traditional approach, you basically get two very different looks from one lipstick.

I think there might be a video that explains the stain concept, try here.
