Glad to be mutton

Right that's it. I am sick and tired of these 'am I too old to wear ...' threads. I despair that the women who ask seem to be getting younger and younger. And I am absolutely fed up of women using the word 'mutton' to keep other women down.

It is time to reclaim the word! My name is Floisme, I am 57 and I am mutton. Who's with me?

I'm mutton. I'm happy to be mutton. Mutton looks good. It looks confident and experienced style wise. Unsuccessfully attempting to be lamb doesnt look good. It doesnt look confident. It looks apologetic for being mutton.

If you can wear an outfit aimed at teenagers at 50 and look like you own it, like youre happy to be 50 but happen to like the outfit and know it suits you, you'll carry it off. Youre not pretending to be lamb.

But on a serious note (I was going to post this on the other thread but this is better) I do sympathise with the early-30-ish insecurity because I remember being that age, post baby, starting to feel my age & not knowing how to dress for it.

In my case I ended up, actually, dressing a bit middle aged before my time & it put years on me - I have the photos to prove it.
So now I'm mutton because it suits me - but also I'm more confident just because I've reached a different stage in my life.

Mutton is tastier than lamb, but the cook still has to be careful not to overcook things!

Better "mutton dressed as lamb" than "mutton dressed as mutton".

I'm trying hard not to be mutton but fear I may be failing occasionally.

My problem is that I spent my teens and twenties overweight. Now that I'm slim it's like I'm trying to make up for lost time and I have to hold myself back from some younger fashions and realise that I'm not 21 anymore, even if I feel it.

I'm 37 and I wear what I flaming well like! If that makes me mutton, then so be it.

I'm in! The older I get the more outrageous (and therefore 'muttony') my appearance becomes. I really couldn't give less of a shit what other people think - quite the opposite of the last time I had blue hair, back in my teens/20s! I'm doing it to please me, no one else

Wingard no need to apologise! I admit that the thread did tip me over the edge but there have been so many like them lately. I am just angry on your behalf that you are made to feel uncomfortable about wearing clothes that you like. I think you should enjoy your new body (congratulations on losing all the weight) and wear what the hell you want.

See, I've gone down from a 16 to a 12 over the past few months and have gone from wearing floral frump dresses to skinny jeans and skater dresses. And I don't care if it's what women 15 years younger are wearing, it suits my figure and makes me feel good. Baaahhh!!!

Love this thread! I tried dressing sensibly and 'age appropriately' for about three weeks back in the Autumn and it made me feel depressed and uncomfortable. Okay, I may look like a fashion disaster, but I feel like myself again...such a relief. Mutton rocks.

Count me in. I'd rather be known as glam. I'm not really into fakery although was a bit before kids. Now, I just want to look well dressed and put together. Polished? Whether that's in jeans n dog walking or out shopping.
