Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Hello,

Just curious to know how many people find the ingredient Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) irritating and drying to their skin? I find Radox particularly drying even though it is supposedly chock full of natural fragrances and extracts. Has anyone tried the Sanex 'Zero %' ranges and are they irritating? Have included an image of the sort I mean.

I try and avoid that ingredient although my skin does not exactly react to it. I just prefer to avoid it and it is in most things, damn it. Funnily enough I saw this in Waitrose this morning and nearly bought it. I actually like the Sanex range anyway.

Have you looked at the ingredients?

Because according to sanex website it does have SLS in it
Googling also brought up something about a misleading advert for it too!

I can't use SLS stuff as my skin gets dry and itchy and tight.
Try holland and barratt, boots Naked range or Bodyshop rainforest range. :)

Thanks for the information on the Sanex and ill add that to my list to avoid. I did email them about making a milder version using the gentler foaming agent but I await to hear from them. Everything is about profit with these companies isn't it. I have used Naked range but it never is in stock in my Boots.

I can't use it. Even sanex puts my skin on fire....shea butter bar soap is the sort of thing you need, nothing that creates bubbles!

Me. I haven't found a soon product I like yet but I use Boots Botanics shampoo and it's fab. No more itchy scalp!

Fergus. Is that soap available in Boots?

No, body shop. I've got terrible psoriasis and have to be super careful, and any shea butter bar soap would be v soothing.

Fergus try this, it's sulfate free and so moisturising. I get mine in my local Afro beauty shop, for some reason only the cocoa butter one is easily available online (Afro ebay shops) although that is still sulfate-free and nice, I just prefer the plainer scent of the shea one.

Yes To Carrots/Cucumbers shower gel is also SLS-free and comes in massive bottles. Waitrose stocks it, along with a few other SLS-free ranges like Organic Surge (their bergamot shower gel is nice). JASON is also good and v good value, you get loads (try the hand wash if you want a smaller amount, it's the same formula).

The Jason brand linked upthread is the only soapy / foamy product which doesn't break out DC's skin in dry, itchy patches.
I use a couple of squirts of the aloe shower gel in their bath and it foams up like bubble bath but doesn't cause skin irritation (the Sanex ones did)

I actively avoid it. I use SLS free shampoo and conditioner (faith in nature) and toothpaste (aloe dent ). I have found that I no longer get mouth ulcers since removing SLS from my mouth cleaning routine.

Do you shop at ocado, they have loads of SLS free stuff.

Following so I can find this thread later, also looking for gentle soap / showe gels.

Where I would never have thought to check toothpaste for SLS! Makes sense that it could cause ulcers.

SLS is a really powerful detergent, it's added to products to remove grease and oil from skin, hair and laundry. Great if you really want to get something squaky clean but not optimal with people with very dry skin.

I have avoided SLS /SLES because I just had perioral dermatitis and it has been implicated as a potential trigger. Finding really good sulphate free alternatives is not easy. Lots of products are being reformulated, I read labels very closely and see sodium coco-sulphate a lot too (more or less the same stuff than SLS).

Unfortunately many sulphate-free products compensate with oils that are even more problematic (cystic acne, lanky hair for me). After a week of really bad hair days I reverted back to my regular Wella shampoo - it has been reformulated and now has ammonium laureth sulphate as the main lathering ingredient instead of SLS. But I accidentally reached for an older bottle that still has SLS and have been using it for a couple of weeks, and my eczema hasn't returned. So I don't believe it's a trigger in my case.

if you want something really lovely and mild there is nothing better than traditional olive oil soap from France or Greece, you can even wash your hair with it.

Sanex irritates me. I use Simple cream shower wash.

Y Frugal it depends on your skin/hair type totally. I tend towards dry skin/hair so the super moisturising stuff is great for me (the Palmers body wash which was like £3 in a local Afro shop has changed showering for me totally), but SLS isn't a problem for everyone.

Traditional olive oil soap like in Nigella's link is wonderful stuff though.

Cost I'd imagine.

everything is about profit with all companies, business is done for money not fun.

your face needs nothing except water unless you are wearing slap, and if you have very sensitive skin you wouldn't do that.

your body does get sweaty and water alone may not keep you nice to be near. Bubbles are fun but if you react to them, do without.

Well i guess you are right down to cost and making as much money as possible. I use Simple face wash and that has no sls/sles, parabens or peg ingredients. It does have Propylene Glycol but i have no trouble with that ingredient. It is also suitable for Vegans!

Has anyone tried the castile soaps and found them any good?
