I'm going with dp to Milan for a weekend in march, he's speaking at a conference there, being put up in fancy hotel etc. I have NOTHING to wear!!!! To make matters worse I'm size 18/20 and will be going with 2 very glam women. Help me!!!!! What the hell do I buy? I am clueless.

I was there in September last year, when in temperatures of upper 60s the women had started wearing winter clothes. Down coats, big scarves, skinny pants, flat boots. If investing in new clothes you could try Pure or Artigiano. Apologies if they aren't appropriate, they are kind of timeless and elegant.

Sorry, that didn't come out right! Apologies if they seem frumpsville!

Just had a look at those, not really my thing sorry. Should have said, I'm 39, 5'9.

How much do you want to invest?

Karenblixen · 25/01/2014 21:34

Go to your nearest Ralph Lauren Outfit!

*Outlet, not outfit, sorry, my autocorrect is so annoying.

Take Deet, I was eaten alive by mozzies there...even got bitten through my jeans Shock

ginmakesitallok · 25/01/2014 21:39

Ralph Lauren???? Size 18/20??

That's it, I'm not going

Right, have you got huge sunglasses? Italian ladies over-accessorise, IMO. Just brainstorming with the DCs. They now want to go to Milan, too.

LaFataTurchina · 25/01/2014 21:59

Don't worry about the mozzies, they don't come out till summer.

It should hopefully still be quite cool in March, or even if it's warm by English standards Italian women should still be in their winter clothes.

Clothes advice - whenever we go home to Milan my mum, who feels chubby at a size 14 (she's only short) tends to not even try and wear Italian style clothes and plays up English eccentricness instead.
She'd wear something like a knitted dress, black leggings, flat leather boots and a funky scarf.

MorrisZapp · 25/01/2014 22:04

Best advice I ever had was don't even try to compete with Italians. That way madness lies. Look your own best, what really suits you and flatters your figure.

When visiting continental Europe, I always want to get a badge made in the local language saying 'in my country, I'm considered articulate and stylish'.

I thought the flat boots worth mentioning because Milan streets are quite cobbled.
