Am I alone in really disliking animal print?

I really, really dislike it. I'm happy to see it on others but I just can't see myself in it. I got given a lovely Lola Rose scarf for my birthday but it's an animal print design so I'll never wear it.

Leopard print is 100% Bet Lynch to me. The visual equivalent of nails scraping down a blackboard. I. can't. bear. it.

And as for skulls. Jolly Roger party hats for 6 yr olds, ok. Anything else, well, what is it with people and death? Can't the world just be a bit, shiny happy instead?

ToysRLuv · 24/01/2014 19:27

If pressed for an answer: skulls seem a bit emo to me. For people who want to underline how alternative they are.. It's a bit boring. But actually, it's good that we don't all have the same tastes pulls on trouser waistband to cover the top of Bridget Jones pants

soberton · 24/01/2014 19:35

Wow, I've been reading this thread with interest. Up until now I thought I was the only one who absolutely loathed animal print, of any type but particularly the leopard print stuff, just screams cheap, nasty, chavvy to me, brings back childhood memories of Bet Lynch (the 'tarty' barmaid look was never going to be sucessful or 'classy'). I think these opinions have rubbed off on my three DD's (well, I hope!)
Unfortunately, not everyone 'gets' it and a close friend of mine bought my youngest DD a leopard print 'onesie' (can't abide them either on older children and adults, but that's another story) for Christmas, albeit in muted pastel colours - have thanked her for the gift but honestly, it will never get worn!

LittleBabyPigsus · 24/01/2014 19:41

sober think that's a wee bit classist.

Leopard print was extremely classy and de rigeur in the 50s and 60s, it's only seen as distasteful now because working class and fat people are associated with it. Also I feel like being snobby about pyjamas is a bit weird, they're worn in bed and nobody sees them.

As a fat person there is SO MUCH leopard print done badly in plus size stores so it's not my favourite, but it has a very respectable history when it comes to fashion.

I quite like skull prints because I'm a bit of a secret goth, they feel inappropriate and I enjoy that, and last but not least they're one of the less offensive prints to adorn fat person clothes.

LittleBabyPigsus · 24/01/2014 19:43

Also I enjoy looking tacky because it fucks off naice middle class people.

ToysRLuv · 24/01/2014 19:47

I like ironic stuff/kitsch, but there is a fine line there with tacky..

SirChenjin · 24/01/2014 19:50

Oh the irony - given your earlier "classist" comment Grin

ginzillas · 24/01/2014 19:51

I love leopard print but it has to have a vintage 60s vibe, as a previous poster mentioned. The coat Kate Moss wore for her fortieth was fantastic.

Morgause · 24/01/2014 19:52

I loathe animal prints. Never, ever, ever seen them look good on anyone.

DancingLady · 24/01/2014 19:56

I love it. LOVE. I see leopard print as a neutral - dark blue jeans, black ankle boots, my crombie coat and a leopard-print beret, and I'm good to go.

DancingLady · 24/01/2014 19:57

ginzillas exactly. I like it for a 60s, garage-y, girl group look. (60s girl groups, obvs. Not the Saturdays or something.)

escargot · 24/01/2014 20:05

Gah! geroff my anti-animal print thread, you're making us shuddery

This isn't about class, it's about good taste! Grin

Dancinglady Leopard print is a neutral in my eyes too (Caitlin Moran holds this view too, I think).

People dismissing it's tacky....you're doing it all wrong!

Look at photos of Bridget Bardot in her sixties leopard print swing coat for pointers....

Iwillorderthefood · 24/01/2014 20:07

I can't stand it.

ginzillas · 24/01/2014 20:08

Dismissing it as tacky, that should read....

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/01/2014 20:08

I love animal print. Its how you wear it as with pretty much everything.

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/01/2014 20:09

Strokes leopard print scarves/bag and shoes Wink

escargot · 24/01/2014 20:09

Who's Caitlin Moran and why does her opinion count?

OP posts:
escargot · 24/01/2014 20:11

Is she a big game hunter?

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/01/2014 20:14

I guess, if the only way you can style clothes is bet lynch style - well animal print isnt' for you Wink

However, if you're a little more stylish then it seems silly to rule out all animal print. But hey, I don't like black much so just don't wear it - but I don't think it looks rubbish on everyone.

MrsCampbellBlack · 24/01/2014 20:15

Caitlin Moran is a journalist with a penchant for leopard print which I think she refers to as a neutral

DancingLady · 24/01/2014 20:25

Ooh I didn't know Caitlin Moran had stolen my idea! She's a bit annoying but also a breath of fresh air.

Other neutrals, imo:

breton stripe
houndstooth/dogtooth
polka dots

SirChenjin · 24/01/2014 20:30

This is Caitlin Moran. Use her as your sartorial reference point at your peril.

Nope, still think she's fab.
A nice leopard print scarf would sort out that outfit anyway.
