Seasalt coats. Is it just me?

I bought a seasalt coat the other week and have been looking at it sideways ever since, and trying to decide whether to send it back or not.

Basically it makes me look like an old lady.

Well I think it does. I'm not sure.

It's lovely inside (all sort of fleecy) and apparently is very waterproof (not tested as yet) but the shape is - well what do you think?

Is it Ok? Or should I return it? (it was in the sale btw, everything I buy is!)

Odd, I know, I know. Sorry. It's terrible!

Pirate I do actually have a (very cheap, well relatively - sale again) didriksons coat. it is amazing but it doesn't look good on me.

It's purple for a start and then the furry hood is ridiculous. I can only assume it's meant to cover your entire face leaving only a small tunnel for breathing purposes.

So it doesn't really cut it in terms of style Smile I just look like a sort of purple Icelandic troll. But it is warm.

I should have stopped trying really, all my coat efforts seem to go a bit skew whiff.

That Hansen one looks great.

I think though that I am stuck with this now. Until I can ebay it anyway. I really hate ebay.

It looks much nicer on the seasalt website. Styled with skinny jeans and Breton type top, doesn't look too bad. If you wear it with a calf length nylon/polyester skirt/dress tan tights and sensible k shoes then yes it will look middle aged but worn with slim leg jeans and the right shoes/boots it looks fine.

thats what Id call a dog walking/school run coat. Fine for casual but not going out.

It depends what you want it for? Its not hideous, but it depends how you wear it and what with.

Rooners · 22/01/2014 13:10

Ooh. It does look better on there doesn't it! Thanks for that...

it's not for going out, as in posh, because I don't ever go anywhere. So just school run, town, shopping.

I can picture several of the teachers at school wearing it with tan coloured tights and K shoes. But I will try and put that out of my mind.

I can see why you're tempted because that lining looks so cosy! But I think if it wasn't Seasalt you wouldn't have given it a second glance. I agree that some of their coats are lovely - lots of nice details and practical as well - but I don't think this is one of their best.

Rooners · 22/01/2014 13:18

Yes you're right, I wouldn't have. It was really because I'd noticed their name mentioned on here a fair bit that I was looking at their stuff at all.

I will try it on a bit more with different clothes and see how we get on. I like the idea of waterproof though - think it has taped seams? I hate leaky coats so if it holds up I'll be pleased with it.

If it really isn't a goer then I'll put it on ebay.

LaTrucha · 22/01/2014 13:24

I'm sorry, but I don't think it does look better on their site.

OddFodd · 22/01/2014 13:27

You're right about hoods though - I look like the dwarf in Don't Look Now with the hood up on any of my coats. I now favour a hat.

You may find that when you're toasty and warm while waiting in the playground in the driving rain while all around you are shivering, you don't care that you look less than 100% stylish.

Incidentally, my order has shipped! You're an enabler, Rooney

LeafyGreen13 · 22/01/2014 14:14

Just wear it!! It will get you through winter but then I must be getting old because I'd rather be warm and dry than super-stylish. You can wear something a bit more stylish when it's warmer.

Rooners · 22/01/2014 16:33

No this is it. I went to Morrisons briefly on the school run and as soon as I walked into the [atrium] there were about five old ladies all wearing my coat (median age c. 75)

I felt stupid

I think I have to get rid.

Ilse Jacobsen softshell long coat. Very stylish and trendy. Also has a hood that seriously keeps you dry (even with glasses) without an umbrella. They have stores in UK. I won a new one selling on ebay for £65 just before xmas, so worth keeping an eye on there.

TheBuskersDog · 22/01/2014 17:30

My first thought was that it was just the sort of coat my mum would choose - she's 78, and she would like that colour.

FuckingWankwings · 22/01/2014 17:44

ladybird, that link! What have you done?! I loathe 'practical' coats, but I LOVE every single one of the coats on that darn site well apart from the Don't Look Now-style hooded ones

Rooners · 22/01/2014 17:48

Where's the post by Ladybird? I can't find it!

Love the Ilse Jacobsen ones btw. argh

Oh I am thick

as well as unattractive

ignore me

HesterShaw · 22/01/2014 17:51

Seasalt is all very well in theory. Warm, waterproof, organic etc.

However their sense of style is not as it should be. The endless sensible striped long sleeved T shirts get tedious.

FuckingWankwings · 22/01/2014 17:56

You're not either, Rooners. You're just in temporary possession of an unfortunate coat, that's all Grin

I'll accept warmth over style these days. I'd like both, but if push comes to shove...

I did send a lovely bargain warm coat back to Landsend once because when I put the hood up it came down to my chin and I couldn't see a thing. It wasn't so much a style fail (I looked ridiculous like ) as a safety problem.

NumptyNu · 22/01/2014 18:04

Looks like something my m-i-l might sport to church. She's lovely, but 83.

NumptyNu · 22/01/2014 18:18

Ladybird - are the Isle ones warm at all?

Snog · 22/01/2014 19:04

I recently got a north face one that is less then stylish and almost returned it. After wearing it in bad weather I LOVE it and don't care any more that it isn't that stylish!

Notawordfromtheladybird · 22/01/2014 21:38

Numpty- very warm. They don't just keep the rain out, they keep the heat in. I started wearing it instead of my winter coat and have learned to immediately unzip anytime I walk into a store. My firs week I didn't, and despite having a cotton top on, was actually overheating!

They're also long (so look fantastic with boots) with a slit in back (so you can ride a bike in them too) but cut in a way that gives a great hourglass silhouette. Which, being apple shaped/top heavy, has never really worked for me before.

Blu · 22/01/2014 21:41

My Seasalt coat isn't soft, as yours is described, it has kind of rugged material for the main part. And it has more features, zips and toggles and buttons so looks a bit more rugged and less 'leisure wear'. But mine doesn't have such a warm lining.
