Colouring hair - any tips?

Am getting a lot greyer all of a sudden. Considering colouring it. Unlikely to be able to afford professional job, but could spend a lot on home dye. Is this worth it or are they all much the same?

Oh that makes sense [dim bulb]. Erm - a not-grey colour I suppose. My original colour is a brown mixture with some pale and quite a bit of red. Maybe I should go for highlights. Can you do the foil things at home?
