Who wants to go grey with me?

I have had enough with the faff of dyeing my hair. Bleach.dye.bleach.dye every two weeks.

Dye is not enough on it's own. It just washes straight off. I have tried every brand there is and I just am so bored with the whole malarky.

I have short hair so could be done by May. I have inherited the silver gene from both my parents who both went gray prematurely (in their twenties) and have had grey hairs since my teens. Now I have a pure white halo around 3/4's of my hairline and is is noticeable even days after double processing.

I really like salt and pepper hair -have no problem with it and think it looks better than a dye job any day but it's the growing out phase that is excruciating.

Anyone care to join/have a good old moan/support/offer some tips etc?

I didn't have loads off, but it was in need of a decent cut and some layers putting in. The grey stripe is at the parting and even my 15yo Ds made a comment last night. I will get a colour in it soon; can't leave it like this ~ sorry! Blush

Bonzo I like both of those cuts, but my hair is curly too (except that the hairdresser blow dried it straight! Confused).

bonzo77 · 31/01/2014 15:18

My hair is naturally slightly wavy, but I blow dry it so it sits smoother. Since I stopped dyeing it I've also stopped straightening it quite so thoroughly, it sort of breaks up the regrowth. I love the low maintenance thing! Honestly, I'm saving hours by not colouring it or fiddling around straightening it so much. I love inspecting my roots and thinking "hurry up and grow" instead of "FFS I'm going to have to dye my hair again". DH is coping with it ok too, he was worried about how it'd look little does he know the worst is yet to come .

I've got really short hair now!!!!!
All the side is grey and the back is natural but kind of peppered. It sort of is cropped round my ear and then swept over my head in a fringe type thing (NOT a combover Grin) argh!

nerfmother is your comb over like this or this?

or, as i suspect, more like this but more, well, grey?

Nerfmother · 04/02/2014 21:25

OMG that is sooo funny. Definitely 1. Aiming for 3. !!

Eliza22 · 05/02/2014 08:39

I'm aiming for the second Grin. Thanks for that...made me smile 'out loud'.

Ok so I have passed the point where I normally go- I can't stand this awful grey anymore & dye it.

Totally different mindset now- can't wait for hair to grow! The grey round my temples actually makes my skin look more pink. This is a good thing as I am v v pale.

And looking around when out & about- it's hair dye tyranny out there!
ALL the women have dyed hair (either crap highlights or far too dark) and all the men have natural hair colour & look far better for it!

I wonder if this is why men age better- actually they are just suiting their colouring to their hair???

And looking in the light at my hair, there is loads of silvery hair (below shoulder length) that has only 1/2 caught the hair dye. Bits it's uniformly like that, so looks kinda sparkly.

And I've discovered Pinterest & how to do hairstyles so I want it keep my hair long. But I spose it's a short term thing cutting out the dye & then grow it again.

I've made a Pinterest board of lovely grey hair pics. The main criteria for it looking good are- a good cut & straightened. No frizz! Nice makeup & nice clothes.

Does anyone agree with that?

arabellarubberplant · 05/02/2014 18:34

Nope, I don't agree. Straightened in the interim if you have short hair, but I've seen some great longer curly/ wavy natural hair that looks great.

The tyranny of the flat iron is probably equal to the dye, to be honest (in fact more so, as even younger women who don't dye have been brainwashed into thinking that dead straight is the only acceptable hair style...)

So, I had my hair appointment today, and to my surprise, she didn't try to persuade me to chop or dye. She just tidied it all up, and suggested I take a tinted conditioner to blend the grow out if I felt like it (non-staining, etc etc) - we agreed that it'll probably work better if I continue to straighten in the short to medium term, but I knew that anyway. The 80s scouse footballer look is something I'm vair familiar with. Grin

So far, so good. And I like the fact that I can blend the colour a little if I feel like it... I have a long way to go, but she was pretty upbeat, and even encouraging. My pixie is pretty much grown out - it's still short hair, but I'm hopeful!

I have been reading this thread with interest. I had my hair cropped 3 weeks ago and am now growing out my hair dye after many, many years. I'm 38 and appear to very grey! I was wondering how it was going for everyone?

bonzo77 · 10/04/2014 14:12

Hi all, just wondering how every one is getting on. I'm going to post some photos, any one else want to compare? Haircut on Saturday, contemplating going for a pixie, but put off a bit because 1. DH really won't like it (shallow I know), and 2. there's only any point me doing that if it will rid me of all the colour, and to do that it'll have to be very short.
