£5000 to spend...

Great Aunt Maud has died at the grand old age of 105, she has left vast amounts of money to the local cat's home, amongst various other charities... plus some to buy memorial benches

Her dying wish was that you spent her money on a fabulous day out shopping... Maybe £10,000 would be better tbh...

She was a firm believer in having a good coat and shoes.

So... you must buy a fabulous handbag for daytime, an evening bag, coat, shoes and an amazing piece of jewellery.
(plus anything else you'd like with the change)

What would you buy?
no Chanel bags please

OP posts:
propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 13/01/2014 13:31

I'd probably spunk the lot on a second hand Birkin.

Barbie1 · 13/01/2014 13:35

I'd get a classic timepiece that wouldn't date

I have a 2.55 Wink it was gifted to me so no worries there.

I would love an original Chanel jacket.

madmomma · 13/01/2014 13:36

Definitely a botega veneta shoulder bag

a couple of temperley day dresses

The rest would go on cocktail rings

LinusDKD · 13/01/2014 13:50

Loewe bag. I felt the leather IRL and it is sooo soft.

A Bottega Veneta bag in bottle green or navy.

An Hermès Birkin in navy or dark red.

And I'll throw in another Art Deco brooch like Bunnymother
I saw one years ago in the shop window of Bentley and Skinner when they were still on Bond Street and I still dream of it.

Mmm, might need another aunt to kick the bucket.

ChablisChic · 13/01/2014 13:56

Hm, all this bespoke talk, I think I'd get a couple of pairs of shoes handmade to fit my weird feet. I have some lovely clothes but can never get elegant, comfortable shoes to go with them so I'd have some glam heels made just for me.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 13/01/2014 14:17

Bespoke means there is no picture for us to drool on, so not very useful for this thread!

turquoise I like your choice of bags, ponders...

MarshaBrady · 13/01/2014 14:25

A bit more specific.

I'd do the same as Bonsoir and go to Céline and get a whole outfit.

I'd like the lamb's leather skirt, jumpers and coat. And a dress.

Then some glasses from Cutler & Gross.

And some Lanvin flats as mentioned.

Just not sure where to get the heels, perhaps Marant.

Also would love a piece of jewellery that actually suits me (I only wear a watch and rings atm).

Think that would bump to the 10K.

sansucre · 13/01/2014 14:37

Goodness, I'm in a similar position as the OP and have been wondering the same thing.

sansucre · 13/01/2014 14:40

Oh. Just read the first post properly....

Even so, I'm actually in this position (minus the great aunt) and have £5k to spend. I was thinking of buying a few 'classic' buys or wardrobe essentials like a Burberry mac, Celine Trio bag, Celine sunglasses and maybe a BV or Givenchy Nightingale tote but then I start thinking of other things I want. It's surprisingly tough!

QueenCadbury · 13/01/2014 14:41

lemousquetaire I actually sighed on your saint Laurent gown. It's now on my fantasy pin board Grin

MarshaBrady · 13/01/2014 14:42

Good one sansucre!

That sounds very nice indeed.

KosherBacon · 13/01/2014 14:52

A 3ct version of this eternity ring. 4ct is too big for me but everything else about it is perfect. www.langantiques.com/products/item/110-3-3992

sansucre · 13/01/2014 15:10

I was going to make a thread about it but decided it was terribly self-indulgent and was worried I'd get a whipping from some of the other posters Hmm

When I get my hands on the money, I will pop into Mumsnet Vogue with some links as even though I spend lots of time fantasy shopping and have a few good pieces, it's a very different thing to suddenly have the means to buy, and I want to buy sensibly. It's also harder than I thought. Wow. Who knew spending money on nice things would be hard?!

I really liked your list btw, Amber's too. It's given me more to think about.

MarshaBrady · 13/01/2014 15:14

Yes do I was going to suggest vogue Smile.

I remember you were there ages ago, the Sessun peacoat - I still don't have a classic peacoat! Will be lovely to see you on there again.

AmberNectarine · 13/01/2014 15:15

sansucre - I'll happily help you spend it!

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 13/01/2014 15:19

Queen It is perfect, isn't it? If only it had existed for my wedding! sigh!

sansucre · 13/01/2014 15:24

I have NO doubt you will Amber!

I'm terrible at posting regularly and of keeping track of everyone but promise to try to make more of an effort. I must, my spending of £5000 depends on it!

Marsha I returned the peacoat in the end and have never regretted it for a second. I bought a Max&Co navy coat in the end and it's now seeing its second winter and I love it more than I did last year. It's the most beautiful coat I've ever owned. In fact and people regularly stop me to ask me where it's from.

MarshaBrady · 13/01/2014 15:27

Good one, that sounds lovely. I picked up an oversized Marant coat in the Liberty sale (one of those heart-stopping big discount moments). Really happy with it.

Craggyhollow · 13/01/2014 15:40

I'd buy a horse

Absy · 13/01/2014 15:46

Okay, I'm probably going to have to take the £10k. I'd fly business class to NY (DH can come, but paying his own way and probably in Economy) for a nice long weekend. We'd stay somewhere awesome, like the W hotel which is somewhere midtown-y (I think).

I would then go shopping (without DH. He just cramps my style. He can wait outside with my handbag) for a FABULOUS gown or evening dress, and matching shoes. I was looking on the outnet and net a porter and found this which is actually quite reasonable considering. or this which is less reasonable.

We'd then go back to the hotel and get ready for a fabulous night out, starting with martinis somewhere, the top of the empire State Building, dinner somewhere lovely (maybe a restaurant we went to on honeymoon where we did the tasting menu) and dancing (DH will HAVE to dance. He would be taking tango lessons in secret so we can recreate the scene from Scent of a Woman).

the next day, sleeping in late, more shopping and a lot of coffee.

Damnit! Now I want to do it.

Specialbrew · 13/01/2014 19:39

Great game, I think I come in at under 10K,

Rolex Oyster perpetual
Stella McCartney black cashmere Bryce coat
YSL clutch for evening
Belstaff Nottingham bag for day
Rupert Sanderson heels
Church's brouges and chelsea boots
George Jensen North Star double ring

... And with the change a seasonal Chanel bag

Chewbecca · 13/01/2014 20:19

Thank you Maud, you're a gem.
I'll start with this faberge egg pendant please.

hollyisalovelyname · 13/01/2014 20:27

Have seen a ring I like. That's 8 grand gone. And a Chanel bag. I dream big!

QueenCadbury · 13/01/2014 20:29

absy I'm really liking your idea.

See now I'm wondering whether I should ditch the diamonds and get and alie saab gown...

QueenCadbury · 13/01/2014 20:35

anni any chance that Maud's husband will die soon and leave the same amount? I can't decide what to buy. Who knew that spending 10k was so difficult Grin
