Hello....not a stealth boast, more of a quick, help me not look like a chav....

A friend of mine is in handbag shop right now. He's just text me saying would I prefer a "Chanel Quilted Caviar leather Flap bag" in black, red, white or gold.

What do I have? Discounted red as I have a red Lulu Guiness clutch. Is white chavtastic? Do I go classic black, or nudey gold? Both I have loads to match, outfit wise. Help quickly please!!!! What's best?

Googled them...I presume it's the small one. He doesn't know me that well to spend loads.

TIA!!! x x x

Can't you ask him to exchange them OP? Confused

SugarHut · 08/01/2014 23:50

Ok....I'm looking on collector square....there seem to be a load of pictures of new and old Chanel on there. And as I don't have a great fondness for Chanel, I can't really spot what is what. There are a lot of very different bags that are called very similar things...I'm not going to worry til I see what he turns up with...

I would if I knew him better just but to be honest, if he's doing something lovely to make me smile, and I turn round before they even arrive and say "hmm, don't really like them" I'll look ungrateful, and he'll feel like he's useless.

I'll just sell them.

Alternatively you could get some karmic love by GIVING them away to some of the "friendly" Mnetters on this thread?

If everyone can just form a queue behind me please. Oh but the OP hardly knows me, so would I be a 'rinser?' It's like the Moral maze. I'm off to bed

Don't care about the handbags, they don't do it for me but I'm very jealous about the Dubarrys. I've been wanting a pair of those forever.

MrsCampbellBlack · 09/01/2014 07:17

Seriously Sugar - get him to exchange them for the re-issue - its more understated and I bet you'd use it a lot more.

All this thread has done for me is make me really want the re-issue now Wink

I think it would be really rude to sell them, can't you just accept the gifts gracefully and just use when you see him.
(I am not judging on how or why you are getting them, think there has been more than enough said on this and some comments really are very nasty on both sides).

Annianni · 09/01/2014 08:36

Is it not a bit vulgar to say on a thread that you earn more money than almost everyone else on mumsnet?

I thought this thread was funny at first, it's now quite sad.

QueenCadbury · 09/01/2014 08:45

I find it a bit upsetting that you can be so flippant about selling them especially if money is no object to you. A friend would understand that you didn't like them and would be happy to exchange and return.

I obviously am naive as I had no idea that this world of gifting to people you hardly know is the norm in some circles. It's not even the money that bothers me, it's the principles behind it. As I said upthread most people would be uncomfortable being showered with gifts by someone they'd known for 9 days, whether it's 50p chocolate bars, £50 gifts or Chanel bags. Yes, he can afford it but does it really not make you feel uncomfortable? I'm not being bitchy, I'm just genuinely trying to understand Confused

And to those people slagging off the vogue thread, it's an open forum. Please feel free to join in preferably with fashion chat or to slate us if that's your preference. But what I will say is a lot of the people on that thread have become my real life friends.

dexter73 · 09/01/2014 08:48

It may look ungrateful to ask if you could change them but it would be even more ungrateful and downright rude to sell them.

dexter73 · 09/01/2014 08:49

But who cares about looking ungrateful and rude when it's all about looking after no. 1 Sad

Ubik1 · 09/01/2014 08:58

I'm not really into bags ...but to my untrained eye they are not attractive at all. Shiny leather and quilting. Confused

MrsSchadenfreude · 09/01/2014 09:00

"I am so considerably richer than yowwwww" Grin

Love it! But I think this thread would go down better on NetHuns: "u take that bag, hun, u deserves it..."

Mignonette · 09/01/2014 09:05

Most of the high net worth men/women I have met use people like Caroline Stansbury and her company to do their 'gifting' for them on account of being too busy to wander round t'shops.

The principle of not doing for yourself that which you can pay others to do, or the more mundane tasks at least.

impty · 09/01/2014 09:06

After reading a few of Sugarhuts threads, this has gone the usual way. Everyone gets divided into 3 groups.

1, those who give advice and shrug off most of what she says.
2, those who pull her up on some of her statments..... these people generally get called jealous and bitchy.
3, those who defend her.... these people often get labelled as sycophants.

Chaos ensues.

I have my own theories, they involve large pinches of salt! Grin

But as always mildly entertaining....

AmberNectarine · 09/01/2014 09:15

There was another poster like this once wasn't there - the one who wouldn't give a nappy to her 'common' neighbours and posted a great long list of expensive gifts she had bought for her one year old and asked if it was enough.

Mignonette · 09/01/2014 09:16

Ah, yes.....The son.

HelloBoys · 09/01/2014 09:31

15 pages! Grin

and here's me not making any boasts about qualified accountant etc.

some people are just INSECURE and have to boast about what they have/want/are getting bought for them/earn --delete as appropriate.

I was always taught it was the height of rudeness to brag/boast about what you have/are worth etc...

All the really rich people, or at least the ones who live in my village in their 2 million pound houses, drive shit cars, put their kids in hand-me-downs when there's more than a few of them and would never dream of discussing money in public, let alone on Mumsnet.

I don't live in one of those houses BTW!

dexter73 · 09/01/2014 09:48

It is all a bit tawdry I think.

bunnymother · 09/01/2014 09:52

It's been quite an illuminating thread. Interesting to read how some people engage.

And it's made me want to go check out Chanel handbags. If MrsCB says reissue, then I definitely want to go see that one.

santamarianovella · 09/01/2014 10:12

queen you are so right, its the principle that got. People upset, and not jealousy,I still can't get "it",and what shocks me is others saying its ok,
and few number of posters on S&B own chanel and hermes bags, wear high jewellery, ask opinions on expensive purchases, and not one single person gave harsh or bitchy response.

sugar I just hope you know what you are getting yourself into,he may not ask for sexual favours ,but the world is full of weird, sick people who get their kicks from other things, and offering you gifts may be his way of asking is it ok with you.
I think declining the gifts is the best thing to do ATM,and see how it goes later.
