Party tomorrow night - help!

I know I've left it to the last minute.

We've been invited to a friend's party tomorrow night. It's at their house but will be a fancy occasion - they have an enormous house and have hired a pianist and opera singer. They had a similar party last year and everyone was dressed up in sparkly dresses and wearing heels etc.; I was in jeans as hadn't realised it was going to be a big, fancy occasion (long story!).

I'm a natural scruff and don't own a pair of heels. I have no skirts or dresses, just jeans. So, I need to hit the shops tomorrow and get something reasonable. I couldn't go from jeans wearer to something really elaborate as would be embarrassed if people commented on my 'transformation'. I'm wondering if I could buy some black trousers and nice top and perhaps some high heeled boots? I could possibly wear a dress but nothing over the knee.

I'm a size 10/12. Any suggestions much appreciated as I'm totally clueless. I am so fed up of not going to parties because I don't know what to wear.

I think that some slim fitting black trousers, a glam top showing some arm/cleavage (sleeveless always looks dressed up if hyper arms can take the exposure) plus some glittery flats/high heeled boots would be just the job. Put on some nice jewels. Don't buy a glitter frock if you won't feel comfortable in it. Have fun.

HYPER arms??? What are those? The spell checker has been on the prosecco. I meant YOUR arms!

Yes? No?

Hope I'm replying in the right place - haven't used MN in the iPad before.

JoyceDivision - I like your first 2 suggestions a lot.

FinancePrincess - relieved you think trousers etc would be ok. Not sure my arms are up to the job - I'm very pale and uninteresting. Haven't got any jewels.

Also, worried about coats. There's no way I'm forking out on a coat to wear to the door and then take off but I'll have to wear a really old, grotty Laura Ashley duffle coat otherwise all I have are a fleece or waterproof for dog walking! Do people have fancy coats just for nights out?
