I hate buying jeans. I never find any that fit 'right' the difference between my hips and waist is quite large so what fits hips doesn't fit waist as they are too big there and what fits my waist doesn't fit my hips as they are too small. Doesn't help that I have a tiny inside leg measurement so jeans are always too long for me. I tend to just buy the ones that are the closest to fitting properly and make use of carefully draped tops in longer lengths, rolling the bottoms of skinnies to my ankles and by buying decent belts

Drywhiteplease · 27/12/2013 23:55

Wow I really thought it was just me!

I must admit I get very excited and nostalgic when I come back to London . It's so much better coming back as a tourist (with money)....I was always totally skint when I lived in London, but I had a great time Grin. I miss the huge department stores and flagship stores, you just don't need to go anywhere else.

Barbie1 · 28/12/2013 04:58

I love London, although not so much when I actually loved there strangely Hmm
Our trip last summer was so good, of course having money to spend makes things so much easier Wink

I would love to see a department store right now. I haven't bought one thing on this island apart from gym stuff. There really isn't anything here. The closest shopping is back on the main land but there is no enjoyment in the drive nor trying things on when trying to entertain two children under four. Sad

Jeans and bikini shopping fill me with dread. Even after losing all the baby weight and a little extra, shopping for these two items remove any self confidence I once had.

Spent a hour in the selfridges jean section last summer with a very patient guy bringing me loads of jeans. I had no budget just the request to find a perfect fit.

I ended up with 3x Primark pairs as they were the best fit! Not excellent quality of course but has got me to dec before I have needed to replace. I also get loads of compliments on them! I really want a decent pair but can't find the perfect fit.

I will try again next time back in London...

QueenCadbury · 28/12/2013 07:57

Why do you think I stick to gap jeans? I just can't be bothered with trying on loads of different jeans but this year I am determined to find something else. If you're not in London though there's not many places to try loads on. I've got a small HN and then HOF and JL but I'd love to go somewhere like dona Ida. I may try Levi's as we all have a Levi's store.

I don't miss London at all really. I'm so glad we don't live there anymore. Although I could happily come shopping to regent st every couple of months!

linus glad you're having fun in London
barbie sending you a hug as you sound down.

I LOVE London. Lived here my entire life (apart from a short stint in Paris as a toddler) and literally will never live anywhere else. It makes my heart sing everyday when I go over Waterloo bridge and see the city run along the river. I like most cities, but I'm not a country girl - if we do go rural it has to be somewhere like Centre Parcs (I.e. Not rural at all).

I don't love jeans shopping either. I need Shopbop to do a discount event soon as they now do my Goldsigns in black. They are my perfect fit and I have them in grey, indigo and mid-blue so black would finish the collection nicely! Ridiculously I hate spending loads on jeans though, even when I wear them pretty much every day, while I'll cheerfully hand over £500 for a pair of shoes I'll wear twice a year. Hmmm.

Right, I'm going to weigh myself then commit suicide.

shopafrolic · 28/12/2013 08:44

Liberty and Dry please accept this as a formal invitation to a jeans trying on session at The Dressing Room - I've helped more than one friend get their perfect jeans in there, with the help of the amazing DR staff of course!
Morning all - DS appears to have conjunctivitis on top of a cold. Any tips?

santamarianovella · 28/12/2013 09:06

I think sticking to one or two brands or styles, rather than jus trying randomly ,helps.

barbie i think sticking to shopping when you go back home or NaP is a better option,
dh lived in east and south east Asia, for some time, and he says that the headrest thing about living there was clothes shopping, he couldn't buy anything .everything was short, and too fitted and even designer brands, had to make special orders that usually take weeks,so he would stock up when he visits home.

I'm not a huge fan of department stores, I occasionally go to selfridges or JL, but other places are just horrible, and I wish HN undergoes a bit of makeover, its looking very tired and in a need of a facelift. I prefer places like matches, which has a nice variety of everything.and excellent customer service.

And I still have not set foot into jcrew! I must go there, maybe when dcs are all back into school.

santamarianovella · 28/12/2013 09:12

Oh!shop the conjunctivitis will heal by it self, but it can be really painful,I used to clean dd eyes with. Warm water and cotton, and lubricant eye drops. Poor chap, colds are awful!

BecauseIsaidS0 · 28/12/2013 09:14

Trying jeans and/or bikinis on makes me want to cry. I'm so non-standard sized that it is almost funny (but not really). So when I find jeans that fit I wear them to death.

As for London, it took me a good couple of years to start enjoying it. I had always lived in small cities so I wasn't used to the idea of leaving home in the morning and not returning from the whole day, or going out after work without being able to go home and refresh/get changed. Now I'm a pro at it!

MarshaBrady · 28/12/2013 09:14

The countryside makes me feel claustrophobic. Which is funny. I guess that sorts out whether you are a city or country person - how does it feel to have all that space. I feel isolated. I've always found London very friendly too, perfect mix of knowing people and anonymity. Whereas some will find it unfriendly.

I do love visiting home, just to see what it's like to have so much space and hardly any people around.

I'd like to try some Frame skinnies next.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 28/12/2013 09:17

Speaking of bikinis....ladies, I need your help! I'm going on honeymoon in February, to Bali. I have no resort wardrobe and all my beach clothes are remnants of hippy yoga trips to India. Could you help me put together a capsule wardrobe for reasonable £££?

Drywhiteplease · 28/12/2013 09:18

Amber I just weighed myself! don't do it........of to the gym and a party tonight then NY will be difficult. Sad

santamarianovella · 28/12/2013 09:27

because I bought a bikini and a beach dress from mara Hoffman for our summer holiday. but as its now resort season, everything is still full price, are you willing to try mismatched bikinis?

MarshaBrady · 28/12/2013 09:27

Because how about Atterley Rd? Quite good for casual stuff, and there's some summery-type stuff in the sale.

santamarianovella · 28/12/2013 09:30

And size because .

Barbie1 · 28/12/2013 09:54

Thanks for the hug queen tbh I have been a little down lately. I just don't know who I am and what I want to do right now. Having lived in the bubble of Dubai so long coming to a place where day wear only means sports wear (mis matched at that) I'm finding it really hard as I always seen too over dressed etc. I have a lovely waredrobe but my toddler son refuses to go to nursery so it's all wasted just playing with cars and play doh. I know it will all last forever and I will wear it soon but the who lifestyle change has thrown me completely. I miss the social scene, shopping, festivals, cinema and all the other things I totally took for granted.

Sorry this seems like an epic moan Blush

Drywhiteplease · 28/12/2013 09:57

Random non fashion related question, but I've been trying to answer for a couple of years and low carb threads can't give me a definite answer, could be one for SLEEP ....is butter nut squash a carb?
I think it's a gourd (sp?) not a starch root like sweet potato, so if you are trying to get rid of wine weight gain by no carbing, is it allowed? Smile alternatively I could cut out the vino Xmas Sad but not until 2nd Jan Xmas Grin

Drywhiteplease · 28/12/2013 10:04

Oh barbie so sorry....stay with us! this thread is a great pick me up.
My sis has a great theory that I live by.......if you feel down or if you have to wear "performance"( shudders) clothing gym, weather proof walking gear, Wellies, child proof stuff, pjs always wear the nicest you can, or at least decent undies and ALWAYS a bit of make up and do your hair, it will make YOU because you're a s and b lady feel better , at least on the surface.
Hope that doesn't sound shallow.......but this is MNV and I believe in the simple power of clothes and make up Smile........even gym kit can look glam with nice hair and make up ask my gym mates, they think I'm weird!!!! I wear my bling too Xmas Grin saddo

BecauseIsaidS0 · 28/12/2013 10:16

I've got my eyes on this but it's padded and I really don't need the 'extra help'. The difficult bit will be finding dresses and clothes to wear that are nice but not eye-watering multicoloured, IYKWIM.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 28/12/2013 10:18

Dry when I'm doing yoga (or am at the gym), I turn into such a sweaty mess that my makeup would literally melt, and my hair always ends up a soggy mess stuck to my scalp...

Barbie1 · 28/12/2013 10:34

Thanks dry Smile you ladies are the perfect antidote an as long as you don't minds moaning I'm here to stay.

I just miss having stuff in common with people. It makes me seem shallow if I talk about clothes, bags and makeup etc.

By the way I never leave the house without full makeup. Never. Not even in the gym. I sometimes wear to bed shhhh don't tell anyone Wink

MarshaBrady · 28/12/2013 10:41

Barbie it's lovely to have you here. And I understand completely why you feel as you do. Must be hard. Big hug from me too.

Barbie1 · 28/12/2013 10:42

Dh has just given me an early b day present.
An amazing navy blue oversize jil sander knit. It's beautiful and so heavy!
It must of sold out on NAp so I can't link but it's so gorgeous, 100% virgin wool roll neck.

Very happy Smile

OneLittleLady · 28/12/2013 10:44

Sounds lovely barbie Smile when is your birthday, is it soon?

QueenCadbury · 28/12/2013 10:50

barbie you can never be too shallow here Smile. drys theory is right about performance clothing. If I'm just hanging around the house on the floor playing I often wear sweats/fleece but they're Nike and north face rather than just any old baggy shit. It must be hard though if you feel that you're overdressed all the time.

because have you looked at figleaves? They do a lot of makes of bikins which come in bra sizes and I'm sure I ordered mine a couple of winters ago and got them in the sale.

I would hate to live in the countryside. When we moved to bristol dh was desperate to buy a big house in a remote village with lots of land. I refused. I can't bear the thought of being so isolated and having to drive to go everywhere. Where we are is perfect. Near enough to walk to shops/restaurants and only a 10min drive from the city or the mall. Also easy to get out into Somerset/Wales etc for countryside. I'm a definite bristolian rather than Londoner!

The coach bag arrived and it is gorgeous. But as feared the pink isn't quite right for me. It's not as bubblegum pink as I thought it may be but it's not my favourite fuschia colour so I think it may go back.
