Best non-chip nail polish?

MummyJ1977 · 23/12/2013 22:49

I'm looking for recommendations for nail polish that doesn't chip.

I have short nails and prefer dark coloured polish like rouge noir but I have found Chanel nail polish to chip. I don't want to use gel or shellac.

I use nail tek xtra nail hardner above and below my polish and find I can get nearly a week without chiping.

awaywego1 · 23/12/2013 23:27

I find Essie polishes last really well.

I have found Barry M or Rimmel nail polishes to be one of the most hard wearing despite being some of the cheapest. And using Sally Hansen Mega Shine Top Coat helps too. My nails are very dry and brittle and they also peel a lot so not nail varnish last for very long but these have lasted the longest, and I have tried lots of different brands and price ranges - Chanel, Essie, Nails Inc, Top Shop etc.

bloomingheather · 23/12/2013 23:39

sorry, I meant NO nail varnish LASTS for very long!

duvetfan · 23/12/2013 23:48

I used Barry M top coat/base coat and Barry M and Rimmel polishes for last two weeks and both lasted a week. I was really impressed. It was the first time I had used Barry M after reading about it on here. I was cynical as I didn't like the consistency as I was putting it on. Only tried once so the jury's still out but will definitely give them another go.

Nails Inc, and Barry M topcoat. My lovely Chanel colours chip within a day or two. Although I've just given in and had my first shellac.

CND, the company that makes shellac, now have a nail varnish called Vinylux which they say won't chip for 10 days!
I haven't tried it myself, but the nail tech who does my nails swears by it - if there's a salon near you that sells it, I think it would be well worth investigating. They do loads of colours too Xmas Smile

bloomingheather · 24/12/2013 00:10

I had Vinylux done in a salon two weeks ago. They have a good range of colours and it's marketed as a top coat and nail varnish in one. It lasted just under a week, which is good for my nails as they are in terrible condition and even Shellac usually chips or pings off after about 5 days. I love that you can just take it off normally at home too unlike Shellac.

Trills · 24/12/2013 09:04

The best ting I've found for not chipping is to cut my nails quite short. I think dark or bold colours look bet with short nails anyway.

I bought some of the Vinylux stuff - wasn't impressed.

Maybelline gel polish - it's only £4.19. The only thing the lasts on my nails.

KosherBacon · 24/12/2013 10:46

Another vinylux fan here.

MissScatterbrain · 24/12/2013 13:55

Barry M & Rimmel have lasted well here too - I use Sally Hansen's top coat and wear rubber gloves when washing up/cleaning.

ElizabethBathory · 24/12/2013 14:11

2nd what Trills says. Nail polish lasts much longer on short nails, and looks better on short nails too.

With base coat and top coat (two coats of top coat is even better) my polish lasts a week without chips, doesn't matter what brand the polish is. Nails inc Albert bridge top coat is my favourite.

justmethen · 24/12/2013 16:54

I have always painted my nails but had my first shellac nails two weeks ago and what a difference! They have only just ever so slightly chipped today. Well worth the money.

As for nail varnish I found Maybelline pretty good.

MummyJ1977 · 26/12/2013 16:54

Thanks everyone, that's very helpful.

Another vote for Essie - the best one I've found so far. Not one chip after a whole week that included some wall climbing among many other things!

ladypete · 27/12/2013 14:21

Another vote for BarryM or Essie here, but make sure you use Seche Vite topcoat too. You can get it in boots. It's fantastic.
