So why wouldn't you just use usual moisturiser cream? What extra do eye creams do?

Good question - simple answer

IF your usual moisturiser can be tolerated by your eyes - ie they don't get puffy or irritated then go for it.

Often eye creams are gel based or 'finer' so they don't cause puffiness. I just take my moisturiser over my eye area as they are not sensitive.

Okay so have extremely dry skin around eye area so is this the sort of thing that calls for an eye cream or are they trying to get me to spend more for no reason.

Eye skin is thinner - I can't use my normal moisturiser around the eye because I get milia, so use a gel. Try your usual moisturiser around the eye area and see if you react to it in any way, if it's fine then carry on.
