anyone know anything about Shellac UV Lamps?

I want a Shellac kit for Christmas but dont expect my husband to pay out for a proper Shellac lamp as they are so expensive, does anyone know if a generic UV lamp for nails used with Shellac polish works just as well???

I have a generic one from Amazon and it works fine. Shellac usually only lasts about 7-10 days on me but that is the same whether I have it done in a salon with a Shellac lamp or if I do it myself. I did my mum's nails with the Amazon lamp and they lasted almost 3 weeks.
