If you get your hair coloured at a salon how much do you pay?

Nosey thread really.

Since having ds I find doing my hair colour at home such an incredible faff I was just wondering how much I might be looking at to get it done at a salon.

I'm wanting an all over colour I think. I'm going quite grey so probably mid brown ish.

I know the easy answer is to go and ask but wanted a ball park idea on a Sunday night!

Thanks.

I'm pretty amazed that it takes a professional, experienced hairdresser 45 mins - 1hr for a cut. My hairdresser will put my foils on, then cut all 3 of my dc's hair while it takes.
If I just have a cut, she is easily done in about 20mins - what are your hairdressers all doing ? Confused

cardamomginger- obviously I don't know about your individual expendable income but I did say on average. On average, Londoners have more expendable income and earn much better than in other parts of the countries, with SE coming in second.

Huge variarion in what you can pay in just 1 big city salon - senior stylist will have a rate that may be more than 4 times the rate of a junior stylist. My local hairdressing college charges very little if you act as a model for the students - and some of the big salons do a lot of training themselves & you can get a cheap rate for acting as a model at one of their training sessions. I think the best option is to get recommendations (& prices) from a few chums or colleagues who always have great looking hair.

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 14:45

Yes I should add that the amount I pay is for the senior hairdresser and the salon does have cheaper rates for more junior staff.

why does it take an hour...

consultation on arrival, wash (my hairdresser does it himself often), cut, blow dry by hairdresser not junior, then he goes back over it once it's dry to check the cut and tidy any stray hairs

Surely you pay what you're happy to pay,

I coloured my hair at home for years but now, its just not covering the grey.

After several years of 'hmmm' hairdressers I've found one who does my hair perfectly, every time, no matter what style or colour I ask for.

To me, thats worth the two hours and £130-£160 colour/highlights/lowlights or the three hour £160 perm.

£65 for all over tint.
Up North quite reasonable here.
Wish I could do it myself but can't do back and end up with 'build up'
Plus mess factor.

I paid £89 for cut and colour in a city centre salon on Birmingham Saturday just gone, but that was for a dip dye as 2 different colours were painted on in an 'arty' fashion which I could just not do at home!

didireallysaythat · 09/12/2013 17:21

Interesting. I've been thinking about this for a while. So it takes 1-2 hours, costs £30-120.

How frequently do you have it done ?

I've just managed to get to the hairdressor for the first time in 9 months - awful cut from Toni&Guy but they were the only space with an appointment when I walked in. I think I know why now...

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 19:19

I tried my local Toni & Guy when I was in between my usual hairdressers and fancying a change. It was one of the worst cuts ever ( I think I went 3 times actually) by their manager. They seemed to have a 'cut of the month' and gave you what they liked regardless whether it suited you. They were not cheap around £50 years back.

polyhymnia · 09/12/2013 23:05

I have had bad experiences with T and G and personally would avoid them like the plague.

optimusic · 09/12/2013 23:18

I pay £34. This gets me foil colours, there's quiet a few shades in there . Cut, wash and dried. This is in London.

Why don't I do it at home? Well I did until several months ago. Have been doing my own hair for 20 odd years. Was in the salon having a cut and the stylist asked me if I was interested. Heard the price and thought sod it why not... The difference was amazing, everyone was like wow, even though the colour was similar to what I do at home. Also found it needs doing less, I was colouring every month.

didireallysaythat · 10/12/2013 07:56

I've only ever had awful cuts from T&G but it was a stop gap cut (otherwise it was going to be > 12 months between cuts).

I assume that once you start colouring in a salon you need to commit 1-2 hours every 3-4 months which doesn't fit my modus operandi

MrsDavidBowie · 10/12/2013 08:04

I pay £90 every 5-6 weeks for roots and cut.
That's at a salon voted best in country by GhD, in SW London.

ggirl · 10/12/2013 08:26

£75 for foil highllights all over
£48 for cut and finish

Jelly15 · 10/12/2013 10:31

I pay £48 for a full head of foils, cut and blow dry. I always tip £5 though.
