If you get your hair coloured at a salon how much do you pay?

Nosey thread really.

Since having ds I find doing my hair colour at home such an incredible faff I was just wondering how much I might be looking at to get it done at a salon.

I'm wanting an all over colour I think. I'm going quite grey so probably mid brown ish.

I know the easy answer is to go and ask but wanted a ball park idea on a Sunday night!

Thanks.

£60ish for cut and all-over colour, in the Best Salon in the medium sized market town. Stylist/colourist is Aveda-trained and knows her stuff. Colour alone (with shambolic 'rough dry') is about £30.

I'd love to be able to do it myself at home, as my mum always did hers, but I can't see the back of my head, would get dye all over my new bathroom, and my hair colour is one that's difficult to get looking natural with home dyes. I think of some beauty treatment I don't pay for, like the manicures/pedicures I do myself at home, and it feels less of an indulgence.

I used to pay about £40 for a colour and £40 for a cut at a fantastic salon (East Mids). I shopped around for a better price on the colour but the best I could find was £30.

This is to cover my greying hair with its natural brown. So a stylist pal told me to buy L'Oreal for a fiver in Wilkos - I've done it 3 times now and I am very happy. It means I can afford to go for my £40 cut (there are options that are half the price but never as good). I do see why people enjoy the salon tho. But £30 more...???

Am amazed at some of these prices. Marshabrady where are you? Shock

NewChoos · 09/12/2013 07:30

£80 for gloss, cut and blow dry in Bucks.

AnnBryce · 09/12/2013 07:51

I pay £40 for an all over Aveda colour plus a toner. I would never get my colour at home, I really wouldn't. Dark I used to use John Freda mousse but light, not taking the risk.

Bunbaker · 09/12/2013 08:06

Like stephenisjustcoming I don't spend money on my nails - I do them at home, and don't go for regular waxes (just my moustache). I can do the rest myself.

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 08:28

Why not do it at home for a tenner?

Because I can't choose 3 different shades and weave the foil into my hair in the right places.

And because for most people, a solid all over colour is terribly ageing and not at all flattering. Your roots show through very quickly then you have to do them , I imagine.

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 08:35

I'm amazed at how little some of you pay!

It takes my stylist at least 45 minutes to weave in the foils then they are left for 45 mins, then the wash and dry takes 45 mins . If some of you pay £35- ish then how much is the poor hairdesser earning per hour?

Here in the SE the going rate is no less than around £90-£100 for half a head, then a cut can be £60-£70 on top, and if you don't always have a cut then the blow dry is £30.

Yes you can find salons that are a bit cheaper but they aren't very good.

mrsblakey · 09/12/2013 08:36

£80 for cut & full head
highlights with the wonderful Charlie Bardwell in Nottingham.
I have previously paid £149 at an Aveda salon in Newark.

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 08:39

It's all about location then Grin here in the SE you would pay near enough £80 for a cut even in Toni and Guy- and my local one is rubbish.

Aworryingtrend · 09/12/2013 08:45

Try looking on Groupon for local deals near you- my regular hairdresser had one recently for a cut and blow dry and half head highlights for £29. (Had to pay a £10 supplement for hair past chin length I think but still a good deal).

BrightestStarInTheSky · 09/12/2013 08:58

Mine is £20 cut and colour plus blow dry. Sadly its not my real hair though so that's why its so cheap.

Lizzylou · 09/12/2013 09:00

£60/65 for highlights (2 colours), cut and blow dry.
NW.

whattimeisitanyway · 09/12/2013 09:17

I pay £40 for a cut and all over colour (don't highlight my hair as looks best this way), although the hairdresser works from home so none of the usual over heads. I am in the SE. Even in the salons here, you would pay £40/50 so certainly not always £80 in SE.

Having said that, if people can afford to spend a lot on their hair and like the result, why not?

Floisme · 09/12/2013 09:42

I used to colour my own hair and laugh at anyone who paid an arm and a leg at a salon. But now I look back at photos and realise I looked awful! I think those cover-up-the-grey rinses are the worst because you get that dead, helmet effect that doesn't go with your skin tone; seriously unflattering. I came to the conclusion that you get what you pay for. I can't afford salon prices so I don't bother with colour at all now. I just pay for the best cut I can and I think my hair looks a lot better.

PatTheHammer · 09/12/2013 09:45

Varigatedivy- have you never noticed that for the 45mins you are sat with the foils on they usually have another client?
It takes 2.5 hours to do my hair but she doesn't just spend the time with me, it would be pointless. Maybe that's what they do in the expensive places....sit and talk to you for the time you have your foils in? Then they can justify charging over £100.

varigatedivy · 09/12/2013 10:01

pat err. ..I'm not that daft! Smile of course they do other things but there is a limit to what they can do in 45 mins because an appt for a cut is 45 mins-1 hour, so they can't exactly fit in another client and give each of us full attention.

No- it's business rates and location. I'm Home Counties near London, and the rates are huge for town centre premises. Yes, I could find somewhere slightly cheaper but not that much cheaper.

whattimeisitanyway · 09/12/2013 10:13

Well in stands to reason that London and home counties will be more expensive. Housing is so much more expensive there that, on average, people can afford to pay much more for their hair.
If they tried to charge those sort of rates in other parts of the country, they would probably get limited business.

GemmaTeller · 09/12/2013 10:17

£130 with a blow dry
£160 with a cut and blow dry

In the northwest and I've got really long hair

polyhymnia · 09/12/2013 10:53

£85 for the colour, in a London salon.

cardamomginger · 09/12/2013 11:12

Um - how does the fact that housing is so much more expensive in London mean that I have more disposable income available to spend on my hair?

As other posters have said, I don't do it myself because I will make a complete hash of it and would end up posting here in tears!

I pay £50 for permanent roots. (Haven't had an all over colour for ages, so not sure how much that would be.)

nicelyneurotic · 09/12/2013 11:14

£110 for half head highlights and a cut. I think it's worth it as I've had dreadful experiences with other hairdressers but never with my current one.

101handbags · 09/12/2013 12:26

Hertfordshire, I pay £105 for cut, colour & blow dry every 12 weeks. I get my hair cut every six weeks - about £55 for cut & blow dry. I don't do it myself and never have done - messy bathroom, towels, wouldn't be able to get it to look nearly as good as it does when done professionally and it lasts so well. If I had grey roots growing out after a week perhaps I would think differently but most of my grey is underneath and doesn't show too badly by the time 12 weeks have past.

Bunbaker · 09/12/2013 12:46

"I'm amazed at how little some of you pay!"

I'm in South Yorkshire and only have my roots done. That's why mine comes in at under £50.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 09/12/2013 12:53

I pay £44 for a quasi colour, cut and blow dry at someone's home salon. She's much better than people I have had at places like Toni and Guy so I'm really happy.

cathers · 09/12/2013 13:11

I pay £55 for colour just to cover roots and then £75 for whole head with folis which thankfully is only needed every 4 months. This is in a salon in cornwall.
