Hats - on or off indoors?

Chocolategirl7 · 05/12/2013 21:16

My first post, so please be gentle!
What's the etiquette of hat wearing indoors? I love hats, especially in this weather, but should you take it off if you go indoors - say for a drink or something to eat? I sat in a pizza place at the weekend with a friend wearing a very stylish hat, but she didn't take it off and it felt slightly odd ( like not taking off your coat!).
However, if you I do take it off, it leaves me with a hat hair problem.
Your views please?

Off. I was always told it was rude to keep it on indoors (no idea why!).

Rattitude · 05/12/2013 21:35

If I am nipping in and out of shops, I may keep my hat on. However, if I am going to be indoors (shop, restaurant, cafe) for any length of time, I am taking it off.

My hair looks much better when I am wearing a hat though. Xmas Wink

Hats off, shades off, umbrellas down.

OneLittleLady · 05/12/2013 21:40

Off if I am staying indoors for any amount of time. If I'm just in a shop, I leave it on. Mum always said it was rude to wear hats indoors

dexter73 · 05/12/2013 21:40

Definitely off.

Selks · 05/12/2013 21:42

Why would you want to wear a hat indoors? Confused

Off.
It would feel weird to eat with a hat on for some reason.

dyslexicdespot · 05/12/2013 22:06

A winter hat would be taken off but a (for want of a better word) church hat would be worn inside, but not in the evening.

I think the correct etiquette is for men to remove hats indoors but not for ladies. Grin

Shakey1500 · 05/12/2013 22:20

I don't care much for dress etiquette Grin

I often wear hats indoors and it wouldn't occur to me to take it off. Usually it's down to a bad hair day so a hat gets shoved on if I'm having a slobby day.

Also wouldn't think about taking it off in shops, other houses etc.

If it was a beret (I used to wear berets when I was a teenager) Blush I'd leave it on.

Beanie hat or wool hat , I'd remove.

Otherwise you risk looking like Edna from Emmerdale.

Snowbility · 05/12/2013 23:27

Depends on hair and whether it looks presentable.

Chocolategirl7 · 06/12/2013 06:42

Thanks everyone. I think it seems bit rude too ( but don't know why I think that!). But practical and the state if my hair may be the deciding choice!

This might help!

randomquicknamechange · 06/12/2013 14:22

Its off unless you are in church I thought but am probably wrong.

meditrina · 06/12/2013 14:28

Men always take hats off indoors.

Women can leave them on: traditionally (in the days when everyone wore hats) they would normally be left on, but now hats are less common people also seem to take them off more.
