Be warned! Those of you on the look out for a hooded coat that is warm and waterproof, heals this warning. You may end up looking like a mum.

I also like the MJ bags but her outfits, not at all.

TallulahBetty · 05/12/2013 20:39

Oh ffs. Yet more pathetic judging of what women wear. So what if someone dresses like a mum? People should wear what they like and suits them and be done with it.

/end mini rant

BenNJerry · 05/12/2013 20:40

What the heck is a "mum" supposed to dress like? I hate Converse, Nike Air Max... in fact, I hate trainers in general. I only wear them for jogging. Are we all supposed to dress like that to be considered "cool"?

I'm 23. I'm a mum. I wear what the bloody hell I like. If I feel like slobbing out in a jumper and leggings I will. If I feel like making a real effort and wearing my best outfit then I will. Differs day to day.

EmGee · 05/12/2013 20:40

Surely in today's world, there must be something more interesting to write about?

I don't care how 'on trend' they are, but those pattered trousers look frumpy and don't get me started on the trainers. I remember coveting a pair of Nike Air's back in 1991 so I must've been ahead of my time (arf).

I will happily stick with a mum coat, skinny jeans, boots and a scarf...because some days I just shove a coat on over my pyjama top to do the school run :)

scottishmummy · 05/12/2013 20:48

Oh don't be so bloody worthy,it's posted in s&b it's hardly the intellectual bit on mn
I expect yes there are more interesting things to discuss, such as fMRI and gender differences
But you see s&b is most suited to blather about mum coats

DontmindifIdo · 05/12/2013 20:52

I actually think she looks really frumpy and "mumsy" in the 'after' photos, skinny jeans with a non-fitted jumper (to hide the 'mum tum') with 'easy for pram pushing' trainers on her feet.

I'd not want to say anything to her if she was a friend of mine, but she doesn't look cool or non-mumsy. I'd dump the trainers for anything other than sports, and if she's serious about not wanting to look mumsy, avoid jeans. (this forces you to actually wear more interesting clothes and stop you doing a uniform of jeans, trainers/boots and one of a selection of jumpers or t-shirts that aren't fitted to avoid showing off the lumps and bumps)

And for an article on 'mum dressing' I can't believe she avoided all mention of the floaty scarf worn to dress up an outfit and cover not being able to wear jewllery lest the baby pull it...

EmGee · 05/12/2013 21:05

Scottish - it was a tongue in cheek comment. Sigh.

KosherBacon · 05/12/2013 21:06

I love a good scarf. I appear to be exceptionally mumsy (despite not owning any skinny jeans or uggs).

scottishmummy · 05/12/2013 21:07

If you say so.

badasahatter · 05/12/2013 21:10

I'm 49 with a 12 year old. Yes, I dress like a mum. I probably have lots of mum clothes. I'm kind of mum shaped. I don't really care. I'm too old to worry about it these days.

Matsikula · 05/12/2013 21:12

She has perhaps missed the fact that EVERYONE in South London, from schoolgirls to mums, seems to be wearing a duffel coat this winter. Me included.

I am with her on the changing bags though. Pointless waste of money.

ZingSweetPea · 05/12/2013 21:24

what a dumb article

"a rallying cry to make an effort"

it's an effort to get the kids ready, leave the house and get to school on time.

I honestly could not care less what anybody thinks of what I wear - on the school run or otherwise!
Mum Coat? how ridiculous! if anything I think pjs and dressing gowns should be the parents alternative school run uniform!Grin

anyway, is Molly supposed to be cool on those photos?
I think she looks average/boring.

JapaneseMargaret · 05/12/2013 21:29

I'm actually cringing for her a bit. She is who she purports not to be.

Breton topstallion-emblazoned sweatshirt, converseNike Air Max. Meh... To-may-toto-mah-to.

And in any case, I suspect the stallion+Air Max look will cause many more 'WTF was I thinking??!' moments in 20 years time. Grin

bleedingheart · 05/12/2013 22:11

I really don't need Esther Walker's advice on what to wear although it might be useful to know what attracts people like Giles Coren so I can avoid it. I'm happily imagining her in a velour track suit now though.

Most of the young mums and teens where I am wear pleather/patterned trousers and leggings, sweaters and trainers. The Breton and converse wearers tend to be students or in the minority. I think not wearing a suitable coat for the weather makes you look like a nit rather than cool and non-mumsy.

amazingness · 05/12/2013 22:22

She looks dressed as a 9 yr old would.
Therefore: Article & journo dismissed. She sounds tedious & insecure to boot. Wear what you want fellow mumsnetters.

amazingness · 05/12/2013 22:24

Plus, she'll be freezing this winter if she carries on in such an impractical fashion

Bahhhhhumbug · 05/12/2013 22:28

Nope , l am enjoying embarrassing my grown up DCs with my trendy clothes far too much. Grin

NearTheWindmill · 05/12/2013 22:31

From the tips of my Gabor clad achy 53 year old toes to the tops of my per una clad shoulders - I'm dressed like a working mum. And I don't really give two hoots what anyone else thinks and the teenagers think I look OK for a mum - not too frumpy and not too trendy. I also have mum styled highlighted hair to knock out the grey.

minipie · 05/12/2013 22:33

I've got better things to do than "fashion fun"

and did before I was a mother too

honestly, isn't it about time people were embarrassed about being fashionable (after all it suggests quite a bit of self obsession and being a bit of a sheep) rather than embarrassed about being unfashionable

I like to wear stuff that fits well, is comfy and is flattering on me but I gave up caring a long time ago when skinny jeans came in whether it was fashionable or not

Mignonette · 05/12/2013 22:48

Bleeding Grin. The only way to avoid attracting Coren is to dispense with your tits and your pulse.

He ain't picky.

CambridgeBlue · 05/12/2013 22:55

Sorry if I'm being dense but I can't see much difference between hideous printed jeans/sweatshirt/trainers and skinnies/jumper/Converse. She's wearing as much of a uniform as the people she's slating, just as unimaginative but 10 times the price!

The skinnies, Breton and Converse look is pretty up to the minute round here anyway, we're not up to London standards out here in the sticks obviously!

MrsYoungSalvoMontalbano · 05/12/2013 22:58

I really don't need Esther Walker's advice on what to wear although it might be useful to know what attracts people like Giles Coren so I can avoid it. Grin - hear, hear!!!

pootlebug · 05/12/2013 23:01

The only thing more annoying than her article is that stupid head-on-one-side-pigeon-toed pose on her pictures. Most Mums round my way stand up straight. Another un-trendy failing on our part, obviously.

mumofthemonsters808 · 05/12/2013 23:02

Exactly what is appropriate for a Mum to wear?, we are damned if we dress casual (chav) young and funky (mutton), sophisticated (up her own arse). Personally,I hate the outfits the journalist thinks she looks good in and they are nothing I have not seen umpteen people wearing. Dress how you want and if your ultimate crime is to look like a Mum, so be it.

XmasLogAndHollyOn · 05/12/2013 23:06

Of course I dress like a mum. I have children, therefore I'm a mother, ergo whatever I wear I'm dressed like a mother.

S'not rocket science.
