Cashmere socks

AphraBehn · 04/12/2013 17:04

I want to buy my Mum some cashmere socks for Christmas.

So far I have looked online at White Company, Brora, Pure Collection and Celtic & Co. Which would you recommend? I'm leaning towards Brora atm because they have the largest choice of colours but they are the most expensive and I don't have a discount code.

Thank you [smile|]

Marking my place here as need some new ones. White company ones got holes in v quickly despite minimal wear on actual floor as I tend to wear ugh boots as slippers at home.

White company ones get holes quickly even if only worn in bed and then the odd trip to the loo in the night. I was very disappointed!

MacaYoniandCheese · 04/12/2013 17:11

My Brora ones got holes in really quickly too! I'd go for a cashmere scarf or jumper instead...socks and gloves never seem to last long.

Laquila · 04/12/2013 17:12

I've had lovely cashmere socks from Gap before but not sure if they still do them now.

AphraBehn · 04/12/2013 17:15

I can't afford a scarf or jumper, sadly. Mum spends a lot of time in hospital so wears bedsocks a lot.

Broraare doing an advent calendar thing with a different discount code everyday so it is worth checking daily. Today it is £100 off a blanket but I got some new wrist warmers the other day. Heres the link

cardoon · 04/12/2013 17:51

I wear brora ones with my uggs - always machine wash them - as I can't be arsed handwashing socks - so they become a bit felted and more durable, i have small feet so they fit better this way.....last ages, years even....

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/12/2013 18:55

Avoid the white company ones, have you tried eBay?

Sleepyhoglet · 04/12/2013 19:02

Wool company

dexter73 · 04/12/2013 19:13

Keep an eye on Brora because they are having special deals every day at the moment, like an advent calendar. They had £10 off wristwarmers the other day so I bet the socks wil be reduced soon.

SteppedOnaFrog · 04/12/2013 19:30

Johnstons of elgin- check out ebay- they often have things on there at quite a good price.

I bought alpaca socks for MIL when she was ill from Perilla. She swears by them but I don't know how durable they are.

CointreauVersial · 04/12/2013 23:05

I found mine in TKMaxx.

AphraBehn · 04/12/2013 23:39

Thank you for all the replies. I will check out some of the suggestions. Hadn't even considered ebay.

I ordered mine from Liberty and they have lasted very well. Easy to wash in the machine and have done much better than my White Company ones.

BewitchedBefuzzledBewildered · 04/12/2013 23:51

You need to look out for 4 ply cashmere - much more durable than the 2ply yarn used in the white company socks. Also, 100% cashmere socks will stretch out of shape quite quickly.
Have you thought about Merino socks, unbelievably warm and durable if you get some with a tiny percentage of elastane in them

Twinklestein · 04/12/2013 23:55

Cashmere socks only really work as bed socks. It doesn't matter much you spend they are just too soft to last long.

If she wears bed socks then great, they're scrumptious, otherwise I find cashmere wrist warmers much more useful and don't wear out.

Darkchocsprinkles · 05/12/2013 00:03

Johnstons of Elgin supply Brora. Buy direct - much cheaper! here

Lullabyte · 05/12/2013 00:05

Have you tried Smart Wool? Perhaps not as posh sounding as cashmere (& I do love my cashmere jumpers and pjs!) but they are wonderful for your feet and wear really well.

Lullabyte · 05/12/2013 00:07

Ah! Just saw she wears them in bed - sorry! Yes, yes try Johnston's for cashmere socks.(But for future reference, Smart Wool is still an amazing brand. Smile )

JollySantersSelectionBox · 05/12/2013 00:17

I love my White Company socks. They are pale grey, so cosy.

Twinklestein · 05/12/2013 00:19

Sorry I missed that later post too. Johnstons are by far the best.

chickydoo · 05/12/2013 00:38

My Brora ones haven't lasted, got very thin very quickly. & I hand washed them

Bearleigh · 05/12/2013 02:20

Johnstons manufacture for Brora I believe! I recommend Johnstons too.

dexter73 · 05/12/2013 07:18

The Johnstons socks are more expensive than the Brora socks.
