Can a 40 year old wear...

...denim shorts and thick tights? Possibly with chunky boots, maybe with ballerina shoes (black), and a fairly plainish long sleeve fitted top.

I have a fairly muscular build and decent legs. DH reckons I'm too old for that....

Definitely not.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 01/12/2013 16:31

No. Too old.

Its a young person's look. Sorry OP

FlirtingFail · 01/12/2013 16:32

Yes of course you can! I think this can look great on all ages.

OneHolyCow · 01/12/2013 16:33

'course you can. What are you supposed to wear from now on? Granny dresses?

burnishedsilver · 01/12/2013 16:34

I mean definitely cannot wear them as opposed to definitely not too old!

I think 25 is probably the upper limit.

HoHolepew · 01/12/2013 16:34

Yes. Of course.

feelinlucky · 01/12/2013 16:34

I don't like it but you can wear whatever you like and feel good in.

Marylou2 · 01/12/2013 16:35

Of course you can. It's a look I think looks great on Caitlin Moran and she's maybe late 30s?

FlirtingFail · 01/12/2013 16:36

Yes I was thinking of Caitlin Moran too.

annieorangutan · 01/12/2013 16:37

Im 30 and I do it. I dont think I will be stopping any time soon.

annieorangutan · 01/12/2013 16:38

Lots of celebs in their 30s/40s do it as well.

perplexedpirate · 01/12/2013 16:38

No, you must now only wear shapeless smocks that disguise your shamefully old self.

Bollocks to that! Of course you can wear what you like!

Cutteduppumpkin · 01/12/2013 16:38

I wouldn't, it's a teens and 20s look. There's plenty you can wear without resorting to granny dresses though Wink

MrsPMT · 01/12/2013 16:38

Yes, of course, agree with others, wear whatever you like.

I wouldn't, but I wouldn't have worn this at age 20, not my kind of thing (hate tights and only wear them when I absolutely have to!).

mammadiggingdeep · 01/12/2013 16:51

I would if could and I'm 35...need to lose a stone first. Go for it

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 01/12/2013 17:05

No, you are 40 now and you must only wear things from Carr and Westley.

I mean what are you thinking? You're the same age as Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and me and are younger than J-Lo, Tess Daley and Halle Berry. And you never see them without a tartan shopping trolley and a sensible cardie.

dexter73 · 01/12/2013 17:14

I generally think that you can wear most things at any age but denim shorts and tights is a no from me. I think tweedy or wool shorts look nice but denim shorts and tights is such a teenager look to me.

satsumagirl · 01/12/2013 17:20

Totally cool. Perhaps with a chunky ankle boot or flat boot?

NotJustACigar · 01/12/2013 17:22

I think that look is strange on anyone as for me shorts are meant to be worn in hot weather. Not a question of age. How about a short denim skirt and thick tints I stead?

FunInTheSunD · 01/12/2013 17:25

yes of course you can. .. as long as the shorts don't come up to high so your arse cheeks are hanging out, as that look doesn't look good on anyone IMO...

Roshbegosh · 01/12/2013 17:30

Well if you look like Kate Moss or Victoria Beckham then fine, but otherwise you will look a bit desperate and ridiculous. Sorry but it's true.

Octopus37 · 01/12/2013 17:31

Yes, I am 38 and sometimes were shorts with opaque tights underneath, with either pump type shoes or boots

AdventColander · 01/12/2013 17:43

Well I wouldnt (nearly 50) but it doesnt mean you have to dress like a frump either! Could you wear the boots & thick tights with a short denim skirt instead? Sorry but this is definitely a look for teens/early 20s and looks a bit mutton dressed as lamb on anyone older.

annieorangutan · 01/12/2013 17:46

The same goes for young girls though roshbegosh if you havent got similar physiques to them at 18 its probably very unwise to wear shorts.

AdventColander · 01/12/2013 17:47

Could you wear patterned or bright coloured skinny jeans? I have some, dont feel muttony in them as long as my bum is covered
