Updo for shoulder length hair

My hair is just above shoulder length. I have a posh do next month, bought the dress etc but my hair just looks awful. I'm pretty shit at doing stuff with it but would love to 'put it up' or just do 'something' with it for my night out.

Any suggestions

French pleat or doughnut bun using a gizmo eg from Claire's Accessories?

How about pulling one side back in a really nice hair slide? Debo's have some really nice ones at the moment. Looks glam without being too 'done'.

Overused 'really nice' there.
