Help, my head looks like a pineapple!

I took the advice of my friend's 19 yr old DD to put my hair into a 'messy bun' as I've got a posh do on Saturday and want an easy hair up.

Instead, I am sitting here with my hair backcombed on end and I look like a cross between Marge Simpson and a pineapple.

Does anyone have any ideas for something a bit easier? My hair's pretty long so I thought there would be loads I could do but seems it's harder than it looks...

Its much easier to do a smooth,high bun than a messy one. You'll need a foam doughnut, put your hair in a high ponytail, put doughnut over, spread hair over doughnut, another band over the whole thing, then wrap hair round and secure with hair pins
