Hello. I quite like the colour of this scarf but please can you ladies tell me whether or not this is a winter blue? Thanks!

The coat is a lovely winter red colour.

And the blue scarf looks like cobalt so should be good for winters.

carrie74 · 27/11/2013 13:50

I'd say both the coat and the scarf would fit into the winter palette Smile.

I'm thinking of maybe looking for a Xmas dress to wear to work dinner (fairly low key) and Christmas day. So a nice day dress, nothing too fancy. Maybe red...

QueenCadbury · 27/11/2013 14:50

Nice coat elizabeth. Looks winter red but it's to difficult to tell online.

bambi nice scarf but I wonder whether it may e a little bit muted irl?

I came across this pinner and there are some interesting winter boards.

Interesting boards Queen! She divides people into far more detailed seasons/types than HOC. I think I'd be tinted (cool/true) winter leaning slightly towards dark/deep by her reckoning. You'd be pure (bright/clear) winter, wouldn't you? Loads of make up there to check out too.

QueenCadbury · 27/11/2013 16:06

I know- she must have literally spent hours doing those boards!

OP posts:
MissScatterbrain · 27/11/2013 16:13

Blimey at the boards! Based on these, I don't see myself as a toned (deep/dark) winter but as a tinted (cool/true) - must be a very different system.

ElizabethBathory · 27/11/2013 16:41

Just had a moment of boredom and started flicking through the bazillion pictures of me on facebook - am now more convinced than ever that knowing your colours makes a huge difference! I used to wear lots of lilacs and springy greens and had highlights and look so faded, somehow. The more recent pictures are MUCH better Grin

Bambi75 · 28/11/2013 08:14

I bought the blue scarf - looked at some other pics online and it looks vibrant in every photo plus description is 'rich blue' so I think I'm safe :-)

This colours thing has injected new enthusiasm into clothes shopping. Before it was a drag sifting through zillions of colours and styles, now I love just going straight to the bright blues, pinks etc. However, i am finding there's a lot less choice in the winter colours in a sea of neutrals, beige, pastels.

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 28/11/2013 09:57

I'm loving it too. I don't mind the fact that I have to be a bit choosier, because I am going to have lots of great combinations. Especially with good scarves. And over time your wardrobe will build so you can pull out that fuschia number with the navy skinnies and a lobelia scarf, or whatever... Grin

carrie74 · 28/11/2013 10:04

Wearing a red DKNY cozy cardie today, so thought I'd match my lippy (WAAAAY out of my comfort zone). Sat down with my boss for a meeting this morning and confessed my lack of confidence for such a bright lippy, and he said, "I'm really sorry Carrie, but you just don't need it - a more neutral colour looks much better. I hope you don't mind me saying it". I'm glad he did - it's good for someone to be honest.

BUT, what do we think? Are bright lip colours more for occasions? I would certainly feel happier with that.

Bambi75 · 28/11/2013 10:21

One downside of this colours thing is that I now really notice bad colours on other people, wouldn't say anything to them though of course.

carrie74 know what you mean. I'm too chicken to wear bright lipstick but that's because I had years of corrective orthodontics as a child and I've been wary of drawing attention to my mouth ever since, though now my teeth look perfectly fine. I tend to avoid bright top and bright lipstick combo in the same way I'd avoid a cleavage and short dress combo - ie one or the other but not both at the same time. But then I do dress more towards the conservative side

ElizabethBathory · 28/11/2013 11:18

carrie your boss sounds really nice - I like the way he put it :) Maybe the red cardi and red lips together were too much? I don't wear very bright/strong lips for daytime, but I know people who do and they pull it off really well. But they tend to be more made up and dressier overall. I also think bright red lipstick is tricky to get right, even as a winter - it took me ages to find a shade that didn't look like it was taking over my whole face (and it wasn't one of the ones HOC recommended, that's for sure!)

QueenCadbury · 28/11/2013 12:37

carrie as others have said it's about wearing a bright shade rather than the bright shade wearing you iyswim. I wear full on bright fuschia when I'm going out and dressed up but would probably feel a fool on the school run with bright pink lips. I do however wear red or pink every day but it's just very toned down. I literally dab it on with fingers and mix it on my lips with the paint the town red Vaseline. So it looks very sheer and natural on me. If I try my neutral lipstick now I wonder how I ever looked good in it. I look half dead! The red that works for me is the revlon red velvet lip butter or Rimmel red diva.

Anyone is the SW fancy doing the style day with me on the 7th? I've jut seen on hopefullys Facebook page that she unexpectedly has 2 places...

OP posts:
QueenCadbury · 28/11/2013 12:40

I ordered this clutch on Monday which has been delivered today. Absolutely gorgeous colour. It's sort of satin material but not mother of the bride-ish iyswim. It's quite flat though so I just need to see if I can fit everything in it for a night out without ruining the shape of it.

OP posts:
carrie74 · 28/11/2013 12:44

OK all, I think I'm going to tone it back down a bit to where I'm more comfortable anyway.

Queen C I'd have been up for that, but DH is in London on the 7th, and he may also have booked me on the style day for the new year with the local HoC person. LOVE the clutch!

SorrelForbes · 28/11/2013 12:45

I'd have loved to join you on the 7th (am in the SW!) but that's a busy day for me already. Enjoy!

ElizabethBathory · 28/11/2013 12:59

I just found a brilliant post on choosing lipsticks for winters: here. Carrie you might be interested :) 'Nude' lips on us are still really quite bright colours. Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in 55 Romance is described as a bright, mid tone strawberry pink, but looks very natural on me, even though my natural lip colour is very pale pink almost white, and brightens up my face loads. The picture of Mary Louise Parker here illustrates it well.

QueenCadbury · 28/11/2013 13:31

Grin at her comparing bright winters to magic and unicorns. Very true though that bright pink looks natural on me.

OP posts:
ElizabethBathory · 28/11/2013 13:37

Haha, I didn't notice that Queen. I think you should change your name to something involving unicorns Grin

MissScatterbrain · 28/11/2013 14:50

re lipsticks - I think red cardigan AND red lipstick can be a bit much for daytime wear, especially if you aren't the type to wear strong make up.

What I tend to do is use lipsticks as an second or third accent colour - eg today I am wearing charcoal and cobalt clothes along with red lipstick. Night time I would probably wear a red dress with a red lipstick without worrying about how I look.

House of Fraser has a two day 20-50% sale - great if you like Mint Velvet, Mango (bought cigarette pants that actually fitted me - yay!), phase eight, coast etc. I was with a friend and she remarked at how quickly I seem to check out shops before deciding if I want to have a closer look.

Will now check out the links Eliz.

ElizabethBathory · 28/11/2013 15:22

Ooh MissS, I'm always looking for cigarette pants that fit me - are the Mango ones generous in the thigh by any chance? My problem is small waist v. 'generous' thighs Grin

MissScatterbrain · 28/11/2013 15:47

Not really - I have weedy legs and a fat waist so the opposite problem to yours!!

ElizabethBathory · 28/11/2013 16:07

Right, well at least I can cross Mango off my list of places to try! Thank you :) So far the Boden bistro crops are the only ones that fit me, but they're not perfect.

GingerLemonTea · 30/11/2013 23:01

Bump so I can read.
