Black tie "do" tonight

Long elegant dress or cocktail dress?

I have both but don't know which to wear.

Long dress is very formal, cocktail dress is glittery and knee length.

I'm nearly 40, if that makes a difference!

Full length is only absolutely compulsory when it's white tie.

Some black tie events are dressier than others. What is it you are going to?

It's a charity event with around 200 people in a large country house.

IME Charity parties tend to be more formal. Go for the long if you like yourself in it.

That doesn't narrow down how dressy it's likely to be!

Will you be eating? Can you have something over shoulders with either?

Sit down meal but I don't know what as yet.

Personally I'd go for the short one but I don't like to be too overdressed.

No its better to be overdressed the long one!!

Thanks for the advice. I went for the long dress and was slightly nervous when the three other women in our mini bus were wearing short dresses!

However, when I got there, there were lots of other ladies wearing long dresses.
