Dh's company Xmas do, it's black tie, they kindly foot the food, drink and hotel bill at a lovely hotel, it's the only night away from the kids we're getting this year. I want to look amazing, I love to dress up, but I don't have pots of money and this is the only do I go to all year so seems silly to spend a fortune..

I was thinking long black dress go to town on jewellery and then wear same dress next year with different jewels.. But I can't find a reasonably priced black dress. DH has just won a load of bonus bonds and given me £100, so if I can find dress in JL or HoF even better..

Does black tie have to be long dress? I always have gone for gowns in past years, and felt they were smarter, but some women wear a shorter cut, is this more modern? Went to town today and there weren't many full length dresses..

That's lovely, what I'd really like is something like that for half the price..

Would this with this work?

Could work ..depends on the quality as to how it would hang but sorry, I think it may look a bit cheap . The pendant is nice .. I dont like the white jacket either , black may look more stylish. Have you looked on ebay? . I got a black coast jacket like that last year for under £20 .. Also if you are a 12 how about this?£70 or this currently £10.99 and ending just after 11 this evening

Thanks, I'm a 6-8, no boobs, fairly short (5'4")

You're right I think.. Plus I just watched Downton now I so want an early 20thC dressing for dinner dress!

Seems so crazy to spend big bucks on one evening, but I do really want to look lovely. Suppose I could 'invest' in an eBay dress and resell next year...

I've just attended a black tie event and I wore a long gown dark red. Lots of women were wearing long although there were several in shorter. I think long is more appropriate and feels more glam! I am also a size 6-8 no boobs and similar height!!
