Putting on mascara without getting it on your eyelids

Whenever I put on mascara I always end up with some on my eyelid, just above the lash line. I've watched people put their makeup on on the train and most of them seem to manage fine.

Is it just me? I put it on from underneath like you're supposed to... I have seen people do this thing where they sort of wink their lashes down on to the brush but I find it really hard to do that.

Fed up of having to faff with cottonbuds to clean up so any tips gratefully received!

Try looking up when you do it so you can see up your nose in the mirror!

I think you have to tilt you head back and firm your mouth into an oval shape to apply mascara correctly. Avoid blinking.

I use brown-black and don't go right down to the roots, only any good if your lashes are dark though.

Very simple trick I learned - do lower eyelashes first then do upper lashes

FreeAtLastAtLongLast · 04/11/2013 23:24

No no no.....

Slap it on, don't worry about your lids, wait 5 minutes then remove the splashes with a cotton bud. Then you're ready for the rest Smile

It might be the type of brush? I always smudge mine if I use a fluffy brush. It has to be a comb type.

Thanks everyone.
I do already use cotton buds to clean up, it's just annoying. I will try not going as close to the roots. I need a new mascara so might try a different one. I do normally use quite a fat brush as I like a bit of volume in my lashes so that might have to go...

I think it's impossible not to get it on top lids. Try pointy cotton buds for easier clean up.
And for lower lashes, use a plastic spoon to cover your skin. Pop it under your lashes and you'll have no mess. You're welcome :)

Tip your head back and look down. Also wiggle your brush as you do it. Wiggling doesn't stop it getting on your eyelids, but helps it go on better IMO. You look like a tit but they you have fabulous lashes Smile

I tilt my head back a bit and look down (into a mirror). I find that it's much easier applying mascara without getting it on the upper lid like this compared to when just looking straight into a mirror.

When applying to lower lashes, I tilt my head forward and hold the mirror higher up as I then get a bit more space between lower lashes and the skin.

Eyeko makes mascara shields - they look like a plectrum. I haven't tried them but they may work. I know some people use a post-it note or business card (or similar).

Diorshow Iconic or Benefit's They're Real are two I can recommend for going on nicely.

I have the exact same problem! I was pondering about it the other day and came to the conclusion it's down to a lot of factors including your eyes actual shape. I have only managed not to do it maybe twice ever. I normally end up with it below my eyebrows too. As annoying as it is I think I'll be using cotton buds forever Blush
